Not terrible but not the best either
Clerk III (Current Employee) - Surrey, BC - 14 April 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedYou’re treated like a number and not a true employee regardless of your work ethic. There is some opportunity to move up but there are too many people taking up seats when they don’t even work in that department.

Insights into City of Surrey
What people like

Toxic Work Environment
Most people are unhappy and little opportunity to advance. Union is weak and doesn’t advocate for its members. Little recognition or appreciation for hard work.

Good Work Environment
Clerk (Current Employee) - Surrey, BC - 1 November 2023
Organized, well managed, good teamplayer environment. Not stressful and a lot room for growth. Most likely depends on department but in my situation, I feel like a team member rather than just a number.

An Understaffed Nightmare
Planner (Former Employee) - Surrey, BC - 16 September 2023
I worked for Surrey for almost five years. During the entire time I worked there, we were in a constant state of being critically understaffed. Paid overtime was not permitted but unpaid overtime was the expectation in my department. At one time, three people were on stress leave at the same time. Political interference was also an issue and the former mayor’s chief but unofficial backer was in closed door meetings with certain managers on the regular at a time this individual claimed in the media to have no business dealing with the City. While there were a few nice people, most people in my department were miserable and didn’t talk to one another. Management seemed inept and made several mistakes during my time there that resulted in a worse work environment and worse outcomes for the City’s clients and it’s citizens. I took a pay cut to leave but it was the best career decision I have ever made. Stay away from the City of Surrey.

Toxic work place
Community Services Assistant (Former Employee) - Surrey Centre, BC - 22 June 2023
I've had the worst experience with this employer. High turnover rate, rude management, and HR is useless. The union tends to side with the employer since covid. I felt exploited, insulted, and incredibly unhappy working here. Toxic work place. Burn out rates are high. Departments don't communicate well. Very little collaboration. Health and safety is lacking. Never felt supported here. Workplace drama and gossip- managers included.
Pros
Professional development courses if management approves are decent.
Cons
Toxic workplace

Not fun for regular staff
Prefer not to say (Former Employee) - Surrey, BC - 23 May 2023
Not the best place to work. Very difficult to advance. A typical day is dealing with legacy issues from previous administration. Management generally has no clue.

Avoid at all costs
Community Services Assistant (Current Employee) - City Hall - 9 May 2023
This is the most toxic workplace I have ever worked in. HR and management will bully you, you aren't given proper training, just thrown into the job and told to take "ownership" of it.
Pros
None
Cons
Toxic work culture, people having to take on multiple positions due to understaffing, rude management, rude HR, union unhelpful

Great place to work for
Artist-Educator (Former Employee) - Surrey, BC - 28 April 2023
Management is great at ensuring the needs of staff are met, including providing professional development training and updating and standardizing policies that are mutually beneficial for staff and patrons. It was a great environment full of creatives who shared the same passion for art. The community benefits greatly from these services.
Pros
Flexibility in schedule
Cons
Limited hours

Excellent place to grow for young hard workers
CSA 3 & Skate Shop and/or ice patrol (Former Employee) - Surrey, BC - 26 April 2023
I worked with the city for 3 years before moving into my lifelong career. I was in university at the time and found it immensely helpful that I could take an auxiliary position and could collaborate with the rest of the auxiliary staff/management on hours to pick up for the season. I miss working there as it was a fun job and I was good at what I did. I got promoted to a CSA 3 within a month because I was really reliable and always picked up hours wherever I could. I really valued taking care of the skate shops and ended up running as a lead for 2 of the arenas skate shops which helped immensely in getting extra hours. It does get a little crazy driving around to the 5 different ice rinks in surrey but if you have a reliable efficient commuter car it's no big deal. I often did split shifts and it helped keep me debt free in my tuition and helped pay rent with the support of my partner, which would not have been possible without all the work they had available before COVID hit. I wish I could go back every year for Ice palace but unfortunately have been injured and can't participate (they offer to keep you on the email chain for an annual invitation even if you don't pickup throughout the year) but I cannot recommend city of surrey enough. Always lots of hours in arenas if you are willing to pick up shifts quickly and commute. My managers were chill, way better than working retail in my opinion. I wish all my former coworkers the best, workplace mostly consists of a younger crowd but it was always fun seeing some more experienced staff who were doing the customer service -

Short shifts and decent pay
Skating Instructor (Current Employee) - Surrey, BC - 3 March 2023
You sign for shifts each season but you have to request time off and it is not always granted. If you need a day off for a vacation they encourage you to not take a shift for that entire season that falls on the time off required. Shifts are short and can be spread apart during your day so it seems longer. You may work a 2 hour morning shift and then a 3 hour shift in the evening.

Zero efficiency and accountability
Worker (Current Employee) - Surrey, BC - 11 February 2023
When a system is based on an ever-expanding budget rather than making profit, there is little drive to remain efficient. Nobody here takes any pride in their work. Management's salaries remain the same whether or not budgets are met. Once a single job is complete and on the books, the days work is over, whether it's noon or 3 o'clock. If you want to feel as though you've accomplished something meaningful, move along. This is a wasteland, showcasing dark examples of human nature. You can't blame the workers. Nobody is watching; ensuring the tax payers dollar is being put to good use. What would you do if all you had to do is show up?

Productive and fun workplace
Community Services Assistant (Former Employee) - Surrey, BC - 15 December 2022
All the management/employees in higher positions are usually very nice and approachable. You will always find someone who is willing to help or answer any of your questions which can be rare in other jobs.

Fun place but needs better pay
Building service worker (Current Employee) - Surrey, BC - 11 October 2022
Good place to work. Great coworkers and the pace is good. The work is not too bad and the hours are good. 4×10 and 3 days off.The pay needs to be better for the cost of living now though. Overall good experience working here and great memories

Quite toxic
Counsellor (Current Employee) - RCMP - 30 August 2022
Not a lot of opportunity for growth. Management does not care about employee wellness, job satisfaction or retaining experienced employees. Very few work from home opportunities despite them saying they encourage that. Many employees are burnt out, many on stress leave, and people are leaving. They keep positions vacant for a long time in order to save money but it takes it's toll on other employees. Many areas are short staffed.

Overall not worth applying
Lifeguard/Swim Instructor (Current Employee) - Surrey, BC - 3 August 2022
I've interviewed and been with the city for 7 years. Before hand I worked for other city's in the same position. They are welcoming and friendly in your first year there, but after that they have a very toxic workplace environment and management will look for any reason possible to fire or penalize their staff.
Pros
Good pay, flexible hours
Cons
Management, stressful workplace, upsetting environment
