Productive and high paced. Lots of opportunity
Bylaw Enforcement Officer (Current Employee) - Kelowna, BC - 9 August 2023
Excellent place to work, so long as you are willing to actually work. Lots of opportunity to grow and expand your knowledge base. Lots of doors are opened for you if you can prove yourself an honest, hard working employee.

Insights into City of Kelowna
What people like
- Trust in colleagues
- Sense of belonging
- Ability to meet personal goals
Areas for improvement
- Fair pay for job
Every job has its faults. Some more than others
Heavy Duty Mechanic (Current Employee) - Hardy street - 8 June 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Pay rate is way less than the private sector, and out of all municipalities of the okanagan, they are the least paid!!!! What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Dealing with management and working shift work. No work/life balance. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Not bad, other than low pay and shift work. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Not bad, other than shift work.

Do not value their employees
Electrician (Former Employee) - Kelowna - 9 May 2023
Working at the city was a good experience with good people. Unfortunately though, the management culture is extremely toxic. With very low compensation compared to similar positions in neighboring cities, there was no incentive for me to continue my employment with them. I brought up concerns multiple times to multiple people but in the end I was completely ignored and forced to move on.
Pros
Good co-workers
Cons
Toxic management.

My coworkers were helpful and friendly
After School Instructor (Former Employee) - Kelowna, BC - 6 January 2023
Working with the children was fun and planning with my coworker was the best experience. I learned a lot from her. Working with my coworker was the best. Bad decisions at the top were the reason I chose to expand my horizons elsewhere.
Pros
You get to work with kids
Cons
It's contractor work, so there's no job security, no benefits, you won't make a liveable wage, and trying to book time off was a nightmare (lack of communication)

People that I work with were great. Management was dismissive, mimimizing and condescending
Millwright (Former Employee) - Kelowna, BC - 31 August 2021
There is very little advancement in the organization. Because of the union environment there is no recognition for individual performance and no opportunity for remuneration

Stressful
ACCOUNTING ASSISTANT/ADMINISTRATIVE CLERK (Former Employee) - Kelowna, BC - 23 April 2020
Poor management communication and promotion/advancement is strictly based on Seniority no matter what they tell you; Constantly hire over qualified people who move on to bigger and better things whilst average employees get promotions for sticking it out long enough for there Seniority to kick in, ultimately creating a breeding ground of mediocrity.

Not a great place
Customer Service Representative of sorts (Current Employee) - Kelowna, BC - 10 June 2017
I prefer not to disparage the organization with a description of the manner in which I have been treated. I am sure not all of the departments within this organization treat people in the same manner.
