Pros

Good Place to Work

Good environment and staff are knowledgeable. If you get hired as RFT you are lucky, but Aux and TFT positions don't have job security as you aren't considered an internal applicant on regular full time job postings.

Fun workplace

You make it what it is. Co-worker relationships are easy to make. Supervisors are nice. Hard to move up the ladder if you are looking for secure work unless you get a package

Busy work environment but little support from management

The job itself is not challenging, though the facilities can get very busy. The dynamic among coworkers is positive and supportive. I have noticed that upper management is often difficult to get a hold of and are not often in the building to support front line staff when incidents with the public happen, which is unfortunately very often. Sometimes I feel a little bit nervous working at night because there is often thefts or incidents with the public and this is when staff are often scheduled alone. I think that the pay is more on the low side compared to other cities.

Pros

Flexible shifts

Cons

Upper management is not supportive

Stay Away

Know before you apply: -Some departments are great to work at others are really terrible-Auxiliary status is not getting “a foot in the door” as you are considered an external applicant in any job competitions -Training is minimal and putting in extra effort to learn and and get ahead is not recognized by management - Staff turnover is high so you will need to work the jobs of multiple employees until a position is filled-The hiring process defies logic. The most suitable applicant doesn’t necessarily get the job.-The union is not helpful and has zero ability to make an impact on the working conditions

Culture of gossip and fear.

Why do so many staff leave? There's a history of severe consequences for failure. They hire temporary employees and wait for council approve a regular position. People have to reapply for their jobs. The combination makes people fearful and secretive. Plan to keep your head down if you work here. Even managers change often.

Pros

Good benefits, reasonable pay (but needs adjustment)

Cons

Not transparent, little recognition, old financial software

Good Management

Great job. Moderate workload. Good pay. Great Managers and Supervisors. Certainly recommend working in here if you are a resident of Coquitlam. The only con is short shifts or not having full time shifts.

Pros

Good Pay, Good Management

Cons

Short Shifts; Almost never a 40+ shift a week/ No Overtime

Overall hiring and some perks at City of Coquitlam.

I have worked at City of Coquitlam since 1986. I have always found them to be professional and helpful for my career with them. They have helped me with advancement within my career. There have been many courses over the years that help me advance in my current job and courses to be taken for advancement throughout the City. I would recommend anyone to apply for a position at the City of Coquitlam that they are qualified for at this time. Respectfully submitted

It's a great place to work at

City of Coquitlam definitely is an inclusive and respectful employer, and that reflects well in the everyday environemnt as well. Training is an issue because when you start ofcourse, they train you but not paticularly for opening and closing shifts (which requires considerable training) and when you request training, there is no guarantee on the person teaching you knows their stuff as well (sometimes they are new too, or not frequent at this patricular location so they possess limited knowledge and more). They do schedule you in for training though so that's a bonus. Senior receptionists are very polite not just to employees but also to the customers, as we get a diverse clientele and good 50% do not speak good/proper english. If you are not a patient person, I would say this isn't the job for you. For me the best part tbh is working with my co-workers, chatting and being casual. It's not too strict on dress code strict or too professional, you have co-workers of all ages so you do make good friends or atleast good work friends. Hours and benefits are great too. As an auxiliary, my schedule has 0 stability but that's the job I applied for so.

Decent wages and job security if you get a permanent position, but poor support/training, and very few opportunities for advancement..

Great people working for the City of Coquitlam for the most part, but management does not seem to understand what the actual work entails. And many jobs involved very little work, which sounds good but causes its own stresses. I encountered a fair bit of work hoarding due to this problem.

Pros

Great people

Cons

Rigid structure, poor training.

Great, friendly, collaborative workplace full of young staff

Great to make friends, shifts are enjoyable, and staff conversations are fun and light. The shift itself can either be boring or very stressful depending on how busy the pool is at the time.

Productive and fun but busy and hard working atmosphere

I loved working at Coquitlam. The hiring process was seamless and I started the following Monday. After four years my position in the clerk’s office was upgraded. A few years after that I was asked to apply for a position in the newly developed License Department and remained there until leaving to start a family. A great 10 years that really felt like a family to me.

Collobrative work envrionemnt and supportive team

Worked as part of the advisory team. Management and team members were very supportive, open dialogue was always encouraged. Although my role was temporary, I gained a lot of valuable experience in recruitment and advising. All the managers I supported were also great to work with, and really valued HR's expertise.

Productive and Fun work place

Exceptional and supportive team with solid workplace culture. Most enjoyable part of my job was the constant stream of design projects for City programs and services!

Personal trainer

I work as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor and find that my management team are helpful and supportive. You make the job as busy as you want as it is causal employment.

Productive fun place to work in

Good work environment to work in, friendly environment and ability to grow from within. If you come to work and show that you are hungry to get things done, you will succeed.

Hurry up and wait

Decent place to work great work life balance with generous time off. Difficult to advance but great assistance to better yourself for potential advancements elsewhere. Very routine orientated work and borders on the mundane very little opportunity for overtime so your annual income is easily computed.
