My mental health suffered enormously.
Labourer (Former Employee) - Downtown - 15 October 2022
At first I was treated well, but the longer I worked there the worse I was treated. I felt like I was a criminal in a prison who had to be watched and disciplined for making any mistake. The management had the attitude that they were better than the laborers and therefore did not need to treat me with respect and decency. They have respectful workplace policies but the management does not follow them.

Great place to work
Journeyman Partsman 1 (Former Employee) - Calgary, AB - 21 September 2022
Great place to work and life/work balance is great. Management seems to be top heavy but to be expected with any government of organization. Overall a great place to work.

Slow paced and wasteful
Operator (Current Employee) - Downtown - 18 August 2022
Management takes months to make a simple decision. There is a lot of back stabbing and nepotism. I have seen a lot of improperly educated friends/family of people get hired.
Pros
Great work life balance
Cons
Bizarre rules

No future Job security.
Foreman (Former Employee) - Manchester, Calgary - 3 August 2022
I would not work at the City of Calgary as it obvious that they intent to get rid of most of the Laboring staff to privatize the work force. They have been hiring more and more white collar engineers, typically there a 3 for every 1 laboring job that was eliminated. They have been trying to drive away all of the more experienced employees to retire, quit, of they are finding ways to terminate employees that have been there for decades.

Honestly can be soul crushing to work in the city if you have ambition.
Tradesman (Current Employee) - Calgary, AB - 14 July 2022
Pay is average, but you have so many deductions for everything that it really is alot less than private sector. Great place to be if you mess up alot. Union grabs alot of your paycheque and from my experience when you need them they don't really do anything. You are represented if you get in trouble, but even then they just go along with HR and your supervisor in any situation (who are actually very fair, at least in my experience). I really believe the city would be better off and more efficient if not for the union sillyness.
Pros
benefits, pension plan, unlimited sick days pretty much
Cons
No reward for good work, only get scolded for your mistakes, No one really cares (and it shows), Alot of well known terrible to work with coworkers but managment can't do anything-because union

Jobs at City of Calgary
Provided me opportunity
Project Coordinator (Former Employee) - City hall, annex building - 13 July 2022
I will always be grateful for my employment time at the City of Calgary. It provided me a tremendous opportunity to learn and grow both professionally and personally. The work climate was generally supportive and engaging and provided a sense of belonging. The reason for my leaving was because of predefined qualifications for advancement, which I did not possess at the time, and was unable to attain due to my work commitments and program offerings at the time.
Pros
Very collaborative workplace
Cons
Fairly rigid in pre-requisite requirements. Although somewhat understandable, there are more was to obtain knowledge.

Great salary/benefits but a terrible workplace culture
HR Administrator (Current Employee) - Calgary - 24 June 2022
The workload is insane. They still keep blaming everything on COVID but I've heard it has been crazy like that long before. Our team is well-known for its incredibly high turnover. Everyone wants to leave as soon as they realize what they got themselves into. Leaders do not seem interested in finding out how they can support their people and make things better so people want to stay. People are forced to accept that the crazy workload and the lack of support are the norms. Showing resistance only means weakness so people are scared to voice their concerns. Most of them eventually leave sooner or later. I've heard that it is the same in some other departments. I have nothing positive to say about working for the City of Calgary very sadly.
Pros
I need to make a living so only the salary and benefits is what's keeping me here
Cons
Heavy workload, not enough staff, lousy training, lack of support, supervisors/leaders not caring about the effect of the work conditions on staff

Overall pretty good
Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician (Current Employee) - Calgary, AB - 3 April 2022
The city is a pretty good employer. Paid well and the pension is nice, I am not a fan of unions but in a big work place it has its benefits. There is a lot of management and some of them could be replaced by a rock, but that stuff happens everywhere. I would recommend giving the city a shot if given the chance.
