Busy Environment
Transit Operator (Current Employee) - Calgary, AB - 23 April 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedThe day in and day out is stressful due to the job duties characteristics. The job requires that you provide excellent customer service to your passengers and drive with safety in mind. The hardest part of the job is not knowing your shift for the next day until the day before around 5 pm. Also if it is a new route you haven’t driven before requires a lot of preparation either through a map book or gps. Another way to prepare is to drive the route before you use the bus so that you are familiar with the area.
Pros
Lots of overtime
Cons
Split shifts

Aside from thr long work hours most of the coworkers ar super nice and helpful. Most employees are ready to helpnif it your first-time completing and shift. And others dont really want to be bothered. Which is fine. But over all its nice to be apart of big organization

Fun job but management is below average
Transit Operator (Former Employee) - Calgary, AB - 4 January 2023
The job itself is good for the most part. When I first started working for Transit, i was excited because I thought the City would be a leader amongst other companies. I was wrong. I’ve worked for several companies with standards higher than the City. The City has double standards. What they say and teach you is different from reality. I’ve got myself in trouble for going by the books. You show management what it says in the books and they’ll deny that it says that. They will lie to your face to make discipline stick. Been there a few times. The City is poorly managed and needs an overhaul. They need to get rid of lots of managers and start fresh. A bunch of them are there for the money but are just dead weight. They say safety is their priority but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I could write a book on all the issues. You can read this and claim I’m just a disgruntled employee. That’s fine by me. Join and see for yourself and talk to other transit drivers. You’ll see what I mean
Pros
Mostly work independently
Cons
8 hour turnaround. You could finish work at 1am and be back at work at 8 am.

Slow paced and wasteful
Operator (Current Employee) - Downtown - 18 August 2022
Management takes months to make a simple decision. There is a lot of back stabbing and nepotism. I have seen a lot of improperly educated friends/family of people get hired.
Pros
Great work life balance
Cons
Bizarre rules

Relaxed and no stress place to work
Operator (Current Employee) - Waste and Recycling - 13 December 2021
Union based. Advancement is primarily based on senority and not how hard you work. Vacation days are also allotted by senority; don't pick popular dates to take off. No political stress. Do your job and you'll be fine. Salary is high compared to private sector. Great organization to work for.
Pros
Salary, compressed work week, schedule, benefits
Cons
Advancement, vacation dates

Daily challenges safely transporting people under a variety of conditions that can change in an instant. Always nice at the end to be told what a great job you had done by the customers, yet never knowing what any particular day will bring your way!
