Junior Operator - Water Services (Former Employee) - Calgary, AB - 19 August 2023
"Junior Operator - Water Services" comes in many different types, it can be for any of the 4 water services (WTP, WWTP, WD, WWC) and they may or may not tell you during the interview which one you will get. The pay was the lowest on the scale they posted, management was good at the foreman level, bad above that, typical day of work was driving around the city doing WWC or in the plant later on. The hardest part of the job was mental as dealing with human waste is not easy for someone who has never done it, and the most enjoyable part of the day was going home. When I applied I had level two certifications and five years experience, I applied for the one that has the "2-year Water Engineering Technology Diploma" as desired qualification. You might be told you will be placed according to qualifications during the interview, and later on human resources will call you with a nice sounding job (HR asked me if I could lift 50 pounds) but in the end you might be put to clean the sewers for a few months (two man job required to bring down a 180 pound auger down the basement stairs multiple times a day). You should really inquire about this and get it in writing if possible, it seems the supervisors can still change their mind prior to your start date and you will not find out until your very first day at work. Take four weeks off work before starting this position, the reason being the first two weeks are classroom training. They started me in WWC and it went from bad to worse there, until the opportunity came up I applied internally to the WTP. To my surprise they actually gave me -
Pros
Benefits and pension
Cons
Nightshift.

Really enjoyed my time here as a seasonal basketball coach and part time recreation services leader. I felt the best and the most confident when I was here and they took my suggestions and management was very well receptive

Damaging to mental health.
Team Lead Sport and Recreation Partnerships (Former Employee) - Calgary, AB - 4 August 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? The pay and job security if you get into the union. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? There is a bad condition of internal gossip. Someone is always talking about you What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Toxic- out of the union you job is never secure. In the union the wrong people are qualified. Performance is ignored , favouritism is common and I was victim of discrimination. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Go to the office and work as little as possible. Was told by my supervision to look for other jobs instead of doing my job

Fun, challenging and rewarding, a great career you could be proud of.
access bus operator (Former Employee) - Calgary, AB - 27 June 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? First and foremost, the city created a positive work environment. The management was approachable and kind. My piers were team players who were helpful, and took pride in their responsibilities. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? I would say the traffic was the biggest challenge. The dispatchers helped with drivers who fall behind. Again, teamwork was always there. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? From my perspective the environment and culture was very good to be a part of. The primary focus was safety and being the best professional possible. The company was always helpful with various training offered annually. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Typical days begin with routines of equipment checks and testing. Making sure the vehicle was clean inside and out. Gathering in the drivers area and going over routes. Once complete fuelling the vehicle and returning to the Yard.

Calgary Parking officer, not a good position.
Parking Enforcement Officer (Current Employee) - Calgary, AB - 3 June 2023
Expect to be micromanaged like a teenager at their first job, while at the same time getting poor and often contradictive direction from leadership. Most new hires will quit within the first month seeking out better opportunities (even less paying) elsewhere. Do not expect any opportunity for growth, even if you stay at the position for a long time and have a high level of experience and education. Also, expect disrespectful comments regularly from the public, but unsatisfactory support from management, you are after all giving out parking tickets. Staff who work at the CPA for too long all agree that it becomes harder to find new work and land interviews if you are at the CPA too long as other employers do not see being an officer at the CPA as valid enforcement experience, so you get trapped in the position.
Pros
City pay scale
Cons
Oppressive and dead end

No work family life balance as advertised, top heavy with management.
Utility Worker (Current Employee) - Calgary, AB - 11 May 2023
I thought I won the lottery at first with this job, but then the changes started. Schedules and shifts all changed without consultation of staff. If you have a family, especially with children involved in extra curricular activities then you can expect to miss a large amount of those. 12 hour shifts across the board do not work for everyone, even the older workers that have trouble lasting that long each day. Past experience is not recognized like it should be, and positive reinforcement for a job well done is never given. They hire new Canadians with zero experience that have 1 course and make them full time and promote them first before experienced employees to remain politically correct with inclusivity, even with some being not physically able to do the job.
Pros
Holidays
Cons
Long hours, lack of respect, corporate bullying

Busy Environment
Transit Operator (Current Employee) - Calgary, AB - 23 April 2023
The day in and day out is stressful due to the job duties characteristics. The job requires that you provide excellent customer service to your passengers and drive with safety in mind. The hardest part of the job is not knowing your shift for the next day until the day before around 5 pm. Also if it is a new route you haven’t driven before requires a lot of preparation either through a map book or gps. Another way to prepare is to drive the route before you use the bus so that you are familiar with the area.
Pros
Lots of overtime
Cons
Split shifts

Fun place to Work
Cashier/Customer Service (Former Employee) - Calgary, AB - 3 April 2023
I worked mostly at Village Square Leisure Center. The various departments within could be quite clicky. All in all, if you did your work and knew how to get along with your fellow co workers, you were fine.
