Looks good from the outside
Department Manager (Former Employee) - Toronto, ON - 19 September 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedI joined the company recently as a department manager, thinking I had found my dream job. The honeymoon period was short lived and I quickly began to see what was going on behind the scenes. On the surface all is made to look well, but your thrown to the wolves managing your department. You bring things up that need to be addressed, and your greated with a "thanks for the info but it really is not that important ". Rumors are spread by Frontline staff and management simply looks the other way. The residents pay alot of $, regardless they deserve better.
Pros
The relationships with the residents
Cons
Management

Avoid this place at all costs.
Support Worker (Former Employee) - Mississauga, ON - 30 September 2023
Awful management. Low pay. High turnover. No corporate culture to speak of. Company constantly divesting assets to survive. Staff is overworked. Achievements are not recognized. HR non-existent.
Pros
none that I can remember.
Cons
Management clueless.

Horrible management and horrible HR.
Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) (Former Employee) - Elmira, ON - 28 September 2023
Management is manipulative and treats staff poorly. No one is willing to speak up or say anything to disagree with management because they know there WILL be repercussions. DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND NEVER EVER WORK HERE. I would give them negative stars if I could. Residents are lovely, co-workers are relatively OK. Lots of petty fighting and drama between staff.
Pros
If you work there long enough and kiss a** they'll give you a raise.
Cons
Management will overwork you, no respect for work/life balance.

toxic
staff (Former Employee) - St. Albert, AB - 2 September 2023
a new employee comes in happy about a new job, all smiles and excited about the opportunity to help seniors. mangement encourage established staff to go to them for any little issue instead of going to the new employee they want to complain about and continuing to mentor them after a few days of training. if the management misunderstand the issue, it gets blown out of proportion and the new employee gets reprimanded and sometimes even ganged up on by a few management heads. for new employees who don't feel comfortable yet or are too shy to correct it. they get a scolding for nothing. they can get reprimanded for a simple things that could have been corrected if told to watch for it! toxic employees thrive here, are fed what they need to make any new employee feel as unsupported as possible. They are understaffed, half of them look depressed and the seniors start feeling as sad as the people around them. under this system, new employees will never feel part of a team and will be shuffled through like cards. replacing them every few weeks. back stabbing is def thriving and encouraged. way to go chartwell management! keep up the great work! it's quite sad because it's the poor seniors who don't get what they pay for and are the ones footing the bill in the long run.
Pros
greeting employee is a ray of sunshine, can get a drink from the fridge if they need hydration during the day
Cons
work every other day so never get 2 days off in a row, if a day off is needed for an outside event unable get it, can't get a day off even with plenty of notice, lack of staff means you can't trade shifts if needed

Fast paced, wonderful coworkers but underpaid
Registered Practical Nurse (Former Employee) - Ottawa, ON - 27 August 2023
I loved working for these residents and their families daily and supporting them through their medical issues. It was difficult when starting as a new grad, I had to push myself to learn excellent time management to complete all my duties at an acceptable time (medications, wellness assessments, falls, documentation). Due to short staffing, I always found myself needing to step in and assist other departments/positions with their duties, as well as continuously training new agency healthcare staff daily to ensure consistent resident care. When a UCP was hired to take care of medication administration, it definitely helped to take off some of the workload and we were better able to work as a team to care for all our residents. I tried my best to improve communication between PSWs and UCPs, as there was not really an established team meeting at the beginning/end of shifts but it was difficult with inconsistent staff members, many of whom were agency staff. In regards to patient care, I feel like there were always a few medications/treatments/referrals that were delayed, as the doctor only came in person once a week and the pharmacy would not always send medications out on the appropriate day, resulting in increased phone calls and discussions to Director of Care. Management made our workplace feel like a family, which I greatly appreciated. They are very quick to attend to any kind of abuse/racism/aggression amongst residents or towards staff. They were very supportive of education leaves of absence as well as switching departments/positions (e.g. server to PSW to RPN). Pay and -

Terrible management- nice residents
Health Care Assistant (Former Employee) - Langley, BC - 26 August 2023
Not a healthy environment to work in. Toxic. No room for advancement, general manager says “ feedback is so important” but doesn’t do anything when you do give constructive feedback. Often times recreation is cancelled for the residents, just a lack of care. Most enjoyable part of this job is the residents.
Pros
Residents
Cons
Management

It’s an OK place to work
Dietary Aide/Server (Former Employee) - Stratford, ON - 10 August 2023
managers are best friends with each other. They’ll hire friends to work for them, and then turn them into little rats for them. Basically, the midnight shifts are treated like slaves to the day and afternoon shifts. They treat the temp agency staff like they are kings and queens and there’s nothing else they can do basically, if you work midnights, you’ll have to get used to the fact that half of them will sit on the backside and just phone home to the other side of the world. It’s OK place to work if you’d like to be stressed right up to the max and feel burnt out at all times.
Pros
The residents are the best
Cons
management doesn’t care

Care more about money than employees
Cook (Former Employee) - St. Albert, AB - 10 August 2023
Very toxic work environment. Management cares more about themselves than thier employees. Expect to receive almost no training but you are expected to train your employees. Expect to deal with toxic entitled employees that threaten your job on a daily basis and you receive no assistance as they are union and abuse both you and the system. If you want to work for a company that that only cares about thier bottom line work here. They don't care about thier employees and will let you go to make themselves look good.
Pros
Residents
Cons
Long hours, scared of losing your job all the time. Toxic environment

Pay is lower compare to the other facilities. Lots of shifts, management is okay, high staff turnover. The facility itself is nice.

overworked and underpaid
Personal Support Worker (PSW) (Current Employee) - Cambridge, ON - 31 July 2023
the residents are nice but most of them should not be in a retirement home, the management only thinks about the money and not the staff or the residents.

It was good at first
Cook (Former Employee) - Oakville, ON - 22 July 2023
A lot of workload as a cook and can barely take a break , the residents were the part of the job. Some co-workers are extremely toxic instead of helping they will do whatever it takes to get you fired. I don't recommend to work in this place.
Pros
Nothing
Cons
No paid break

Amazing workplace to be at
Leasing Consultant (Current Employee) - Montréal, QC - 18 July 2023
I started the leasing consultant job about 3 months ago and the only thing is can say is I’m impressed. It’s the first time that I set foot in a retirement home and the more time I spend here, the more I realize I had a totally different view of what a retirement residence actually is.The management is really working for the residents as much as they are present for their employees.

Very toxic workplace
Personal Support Worker (PSW) (Former Employee) - Burlington, ON - 13 July 2023
There is no home work life balance , management will team up and bully employees into doing their jobs . There is no reward for doing your job properly . You are shunned if you have a genuine passion for caring. Employees who make mistakes and errors are regularly rewarded and given special treatment.
Pros
Some staff are really great people.
Cons
Long hours, no reward, low pay, toxic, bullying, abuse and neglect.

It was one of the most toxic workplaces I have worked at
RPN Health and Wellness Manager (Former Employee) - Cambridge, ON - 12 July 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Corporate leaders were great! What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Pay is not great, expectations are high, No life-work balance. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Staff need do not matter , you work short all the time, the GM put herself before other staff What is a typical day like for you at the company? Stressful, onsite leadership was terrible and it was go do what you can for the residents and get out at the end of the day
