Decent place to work

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Pros: Always pay on time , you will get all your hours if you are full-time/part-time except during summers they are lesser shifts but not too bad. Management is okay and responsive. Cons: Too many forms to fill and you always have to renew when expired.Pay is 15.25 which is too low and most shifts are 12hrs.

Boring job with no training

When I worked for carecor, there was no training for the patient attendant position and nurses expected you to know everything and weren't willing to help. Mainly worked with patients living with dementia and not having training for that can be tough and stressful, especially since nurses were often avoiding those patients (at least in Halifax). Good job for shift freedom though, 12 hour shifts, either day or night, you get to pick when you work.

Good experience

Its a good place to begin working in a clinical, healthcare environment. It is a bit of a challenge at times and the pay is not stellar, but overall good experience if you hope to work in healthcare in the future.

Good work - life balance

As a casual staff it was a good work - life balance and flexibility in schedule. The scheduling team can be sometimes hard to deal with but overall it was fine. Management not perfect but overall good and misunderstandings were dealt with professionally.

Pros

Flexibility in schedule

Cons

Pay rate low

Terrible, if you value your dignity and mental health don’t do it

TERRIBLE pay, you get more involved than you expect and get no support. Not treated with dignity by hospital staff. Put in very uncomfortable situations where personal well being and patient wellbeing is compromised. Constant communication problems about shifts and having them double booked. Can be impossible to get breaks sorted, all the staff make it clear they hate “sitters”. You feel the job is good for the experience but end up being truly demoralizing.

It’s okay. Can vary depending on the client and shift

It’s okay. Can vary from boring to trying to rewarding depending on the client and shift. Shifts can be long as in twelve hours in length. On your own sometimes as you are ignored by other health professionals, seen as an outsider and deal with condescending attitudes from nursing staff. Need strong life/people skills to do this as it is not as easy as people think.

Pros

Work in the hospital, get to meet and work with various demographics of people, rewarding

Cons

Long hours, not the greatest paying, seen as disposable by nurses

Relaxed work environment

It was okay as a part time job as a student. Didn't like that there were short notice for shifts but overall, you feel supported and it's good for entry level job in healthcare.

Fun place to work but they pay cheap for PSW

The experience working in the hospital is fun learning experience. The management wants you to purchase your own kits during COVID. They give very limited swab kits to the staff before and you have to pick it up only on certain days and hours. It is very inconvenient for the staff. They always threaten the staff if you don't pick up shifts or absent that you will lose your job. Overall they lack supervision and no training for the staff. They pay very cheap for a hospital job 🙄 only 18??? No night shift differential pay, no overtime pay. They often cancels your shift.

Difficult to work with

Hard to balance as a casual worker and full time student. Shifts often confirmed last minute and will need to run for your shift. Minimum wage for mostly night shifts, 7pm to 7am usually, your job will definitely be partly PSW as well, not just sitting. Management constantly find reasons to threat to terminate your contract. This job is emotionally and physically demanding and it will be very difficult to save any money. The hospital and government funding is probably more than enough to pay more than minimum wage, even the nurses think 15 is too little for sitters especially when this agency expects you to take this job seriously. Unempathetic experience overall. The only good thing is the hospital experience.

Sucks

Management sucks and there are often not enough hours at a location they promise you. Management will at you for no reason and constantly harasses you.

Self-Directed, Not for Everyone

I loved learning about the hospital environment, but I often felt lost and confused about what to do. You don't get any supervision on the job, or directive job goals. You have to manage your time and make decisions you feel comfortable to make. Sometimes, my responsibilities would bleed into those of a PSW and I didn't receive any compensation for this. I also could only get 12 hour shifts, which is not realistic as a student. Some of the patients were violent and I did not feel compensated well-enough to deal with that behaviour. I don't work there anymore, but I do still recommend it as a way to get your toes wet in the hospital environment

Pros

Hospital environment experience

Cons

long hours, lack of direction

Variety shifts

With carecor, I did get the opportunity to work within the community and hospital as a PSW. Hospital shifts are flexible for you anytime. Staff were friendly.

Pros

Flexibility

Cons

Pay

it's a good place to work in your early 20's

You are basically sitting in a chair for 12 hour shifts. you are placed on a rotating schedule if you're full time of 4 12 hour shifts per week. Two weeks are day shifts 7am-7pm, and the next two weeks are evenings 3-11, 3-9, or overnight 7pm-7am. I found this very difficult to switch back and forth. And you don't have a choice of your shifts unless you drop your availability down to part time. Staff does work with you to accommodate you, but their hands are also tied.

Pros

easy work, 3 breaks

Cons

long hours if you're not used to 12 hour days, you don't get to choose your hours, it can be boring sitting in a chair for 12 hours a day, application process is very long and you have to jump through alot of hoops
