worst company ever
Machine Operator (Former Employee) –  Winnipeg, MB16 October 2019
no safety, get mistreated and disrespected as an employee and as a human being, manager has no vision on how to improve morale in his production team, owner is a guy who walks around and says nothing to the people who are keeping his dream alive for him.

old tools, unsafe machinery, nobody will listen to you if you have something to say unless it's something they have to say.

other than that, hey you can learn and gain experience in the trade but i would advise you to never, ever work here! GO ELSEWHERE!

if you feel like offing yourself, this is the place to work. You might get lucky and dodge the first falling bridge murder, but I am sure the second one falling won't be to far behind.

Worst place I have ever seen! Don't work here!
Welder (Former Employee) –  Winnipeg, MB18 August 2019
This is by far the worst environment for a tradesman to work at. The boss will hire you on a dime, but beware because you will get fired just as fast as you got hired. Wages are not fair, everybody gets paid different and if you ask for a raise you could possibly be yelled at, sweared at or even as far as being fired. The owner turns a blind eye to the way his workers are treated, I haven't seen an owner less involved in his company than this place. He doesn't seem to care of pay attention to the day to day operations, he allows the treatment of employees to go on. You will get yelled at, sweared at, suspended and so on if the manager sees you and you're not doing the work the way that they want you or your doing something and he doesn't like the way you're doing it.

All of the tools and machinery are so old, they are past the end of their life but the management seems to want to keep pushing whatever they can out of these outdated, inefficient and sometimes dangerous to use machines. You have to ask for everything, if you need a tool you could be waiting up to half an hour just to get it. PPE should be available to a worker at anytime, but you have to ask for any kind of PPE that you need such as glasses, ear plugs, gloves and so on. If you do not have your old pair of PPE, don't count on getting a new one. You will probably have to work without whatever PPE you can't get, until they see that it's a safety problem and then they'll give it to you.

The work is great, you can learn an extreme amount of fabrication and welding skills. Most of the types of jobs are bridge
more... jobs, but they also do some other structural jobs as well. It is a great place to learn this type of work, but beware any long term stays because it is not worth staying.

There are always safety issues but nobody seems to care about it, they often have large leaks of water when it rains and welding cables and extension cords that are live and have wires exposed are soaked in the water but supervisors and management seem to not care and want you to continue working whatsoever. The welding machines are outdated, I have not seen any new machines brought in in my time there. If you're a company and you make money off of a contract, it is a good idea to put it into some new welders but that is not the case here.

Great place to learn and improve your skills, but get out and don't look back.

Very unsafe. Management uses threats everyday. Really high turnover rate. Management has very few favorites. Worst place I've ever worked at. Weekly meeting is just a rant to put employees down.
Pros
You wont be here long
Cons
Management, work conditions, wage, hostility, harassment.

Capitol Steel Corp Winnipeg
Project Coordinator/Tool Crib Manager (Former Employee) –  Winnipeg, Mb19 November 2018
Steel production plant that produces bridge girders and other large infrastructure components. They have an experienced field crew and also do site installation.
Dynamic fast paced working environment. Very low light, with congested plant.
Shop superintendent is abusive and has hired many of his relations and has placed them in key management positions, different workers are given special treatment.
Workers are friendly and knowledgeable.
The hardest part of the job is trying to remain positive with the management team that is in place.
The chance to learn new things. Knowing I played a role and was part of many of Canada's major infrastructure projects gives me a source of pride in my work.
Pros
workers
Cons

Unsafe workplace with lots of management issues
Machine Operator (Former Employee) –  Winnipeg, MB17 May 2018
Treating workers like garbage and yelling at them bad words for any kind of mistake is part of a normal day, always ready to point fingers at you. Workers are expected to work overtime and on holidays. Tools are old, heavy and not efficient making the task more complicated than expected on the other hand some workers mishandle them as well. Hardware is cheap too. Safety meetings are such an hypocritical joke when there are hazards all over the place, and employees work above 6 ft without proper equipment, in addition, you are expected to keep very cheap protective equipment until completely unusable. They do not care about improving the place either, seen that it rains inside.
Very little care to prevent welding pollution, dust and paint which is done in the middle of the working area when paint shop is busy.
Union does not exist because it would have stopped operations many years ago.
Pros
Paid job with overtime possibility
Cons
Horrible management

Not what it seems
Welder/Fabricator (Former Employee) –  Winnipeg, MB11 April 2018
I got hired on the spot which was great but after working there I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Employee's shouldn't have to go into work afraid of getting fired and yelled at if they have a concern and choose to speak up. The way I see employees being talked (yelled) at from management in front of others is really uncalled for. There is no respect. This work place is not professional and has really bad management. Long hours, short breaks, dirty environment you are off better getting a job else where. Know your worth because its not worth it here

Working there not recommended
Worker (Former Employee) –  Winnipeg, MB24 March 2018
The minute you stand up to management or they find out you are smarter than they are, you're as good as gone. As this is relatively easy to do, this is common at Capitol Steel, resulting in a very very high employee turnover. They don't treat their workers well, and that is putting it nice. If you work there, best keep your head down! Also, lotsa nepotism.

Questionable place...don't work there...Please!

Captiol Steel
Crane Operator (Former Employee) –  Winnipeg, MB21 March 2018
Most of my job consisted of on the fly work, whatever the processors needed for Steel plates,HHS tubes, Flat bar, I would bring it to them usually weighing anywhere from 2000 pnds to 55 000 pnds. Usually given instructions throughout the day would be "figure it out" and i would have to make due with those instructions no matter how vague.
Pros
Provided work gloves, ear plugs, highvise vests
Cons
Very dirty enviroment with little to no care of employees safety

Learn here then get out.
Machine operator (Former Employee) –  Winnipeg, MB29 June 2017
You can learn how to operate several machines relevant to fabrication and erecting in the steel industry.

The management is very poor consisting primarily of one family which shirks responsibilities and blame nearly daily.

Hardest part? Waking up in the morning and hating myself everyday, the actual work was enjoyable, but pay/benefits and the management driving a bus over top of the employees at every possible moment wears you down.
Pros
Free Standup comedy every Thursday.
Cons
Poor pay, erratic overtime, asking/forcing employees to cancel holidays.

Not a place I would recomend to anyone unless for temporary income, while continuing to seek better opportunities.
QA Document Controller & QC Inspector (Former Employee) –  Winnipeg, MB22 February 2014
Unstable. Poor work environment. Poorly managed. Poor training structure, but very demanding supervision and policies. Quick to terminate rather than improve or correct staff capabilities. High employee turn overs - no appreciation shown to shop workers.
Pros
None, there are little or no incentives for shop employees to stay.
Cons
Recently all reviews and pay increases were placed on hold for an indefinate period, many have not seen a pay increase in 3+ years, except for friends or family of top management, not the most safe or healthy work environments.
