Enjoy it a lot

Depending on the manager on, things are organized and I get my excersize. The pay is a bit low, it can be a bit stressful for 21 per hour. Hoping to advance to ft soon.

Poor place to work

There was a lot of yelling and screaming at the office. The management team always fight with the union employees. Bad work atmosphere. The training received did not match the reality of the job.

Pros

Good pay

Cons

Bad work environment bad training

Canadian Crown Corp that is Profitable

Although not well known, the crown corporation “Canada Post” has been profitable for mNy years and only shows any negative activity when the Government pulls in the retirement surplus (or not) into the mix. This is a Unionized shop environment and requires those who work here to pay a portion of their wage to the union itself (where this may raise the ire of some it does more good than bad in the long run) In any event the work is steady and requires mental knowledge of the mailing system and training is supplying oversll it’s a good place to work

Pros

Reasonable wages and time off

Cons

Work/life balance can take a hit

Working here gave me more experience with dealing with people in close quarters.

Working here gave me more experience with dealing with people in close quarters. there is a tremendous amount of office politics within the company. The union is weak. This presents a challenge surviving the workday. Once you have your work sorted and you’re on your own it’s a wonderful job and opportunity to get to know the public in your area.

Pros

Difficult to get in the swing of things but once there it is a good occupation

I enjoyed my time at Canada Post my only complaint is that the help available to new hires is very limited once the training is complete. You are kind of thrown into the fire and left to learn a lot on your own. Also there is union issues that are involved and once again there is very little guidance given when you are a term temporary worker, once you get on permanent and your dues increase the attention and direction improve.

Toxic Environment

Management at Canada Post is so fixated on "screwing the union" that the employees get caught in the middle and it's not pleasant. A day begins with a strict "no early starts" policy. You must sort your mail in a certain amount of time as you share your sorting case with another person. Management is woeful. Most of them have NEVER delivered a single letter, so they have no idea how the job works "in real life". The hardest part of the job is being inside with management breathing down your neck non-stop. Delivering your route is the best part of the job.

Difficult and pressuirised

Horrible management, unfair expectations this is not mail delivery anymore, it’s a parcel company! Your day can be very, very long and you must provide your own vehicle with a cargo capacity of 100 cubic feet..

can be a lot of fun with a properly developed team all working together to achieve the same goal

start the day with all engines on go, always problems to solve, many people to take care of with unique issues...customer service always a priority, very fast paced, although sometimes seems upper management is immune to the day to day floor operations and logistics of getting mail routed correctly and on the street in a safe and expedient manner...overall i stayed for 28.5 years so did present challenging opportunities

Canada Post delivers beyond recognition.

Canada Post is a Crown Corporation that is mandated to deliver mail to every Canadian, regardless how remote the resident is. With the letter mail volume going down, Canada post is focusing towards parcels business which is going up with the increasing online shopping. Canada Post is doing its job with responsibility and care beyond many understand.

Faced paced work envirolment

Work till you drop, specially during the months of Dec, January and February. Dangerous specially on winter. Relief mail carriers have use their vehicles and when you get stuck or have break down your on your own. Management from different depot varies, some them are nasty people indeed.

The struggle between Union and Corporation

To become a letter carrier you have to do your time as an on-call zero-hour contract. This means that there is no major requirements beside privilege or desperation to work a zero-hour guaranteed work contract. If you do not have obligations, children, mortgage.. etc. Then perhaps you can put in the time, they say this term can last two years or more you can have the seniority to get a part-time or full-time route. The Corporation is fine with it because they can hire way more people than are required to cover shifts and do not have to guarantee any hours. The Union should be against it because it is equivalent to hazing and does not promote equality or trust in the union. A simple solution would be to require all contracts to be guaranteed some hours. Other unions do this with a minimum of 15 hours a week for example. It would curb the Corporations' abuse of the system in overhiring and creating massive churn in term employees.

Pros

Union

Cons

Term Contracts

Over all good experience

It is tough job when weather is tough. It is physically demanding when you are delivering mail on foot. When you become part of Canada post you can apply for other jobs of the organization. You can work any where in Canada.

No Minority in management

If you are a minority (black) and there is a position for Supervisor/Superintendent/Manager anywhere in southern Alberta, you need not apply. You check the facts, I'm a born and raised brown Calgarian and I saw guys who are black and very qualified passed over for progression with no explanation. Someone need to run an audit in Southern Alberta Canada Post because it's not right.

Pros

Interacting with Customers

Cons

Bad management & Selective

Not the job it used to be

If management doesn't screw you over the union does. This isn't the job you think it is ...basically collating flyers is the main part of the job. I personally won't recommend this company to anyone

Pour

I loved the work. Hated the lazy idiots that got paid the same as me and sat around on their butts. Union was a pain in the derrière too. They do nothing for families, no Christmas party for employees or the children, no Stampede breakfast... Not family oriented at all

Horrid

Very negative experience. Getting on fulltime is next to impossible. Getting an inside job is like winning the lottery. All goes by seniority. Management is horrific. Getting growled at is just life. You're given a different route all the time and expected to complete it in the same time as the regular postman who knows his route. Off season no hours.
