think before you leap

Much better orgs than this department. They let anybody become a manager, even without the skills or background. The work/family life balance is not flexible. Systemic bullying and psychological harassment at highest levels, who are only interested in advancing their careers. You are eitherone of them or they are against you and will do anything to get you out. A lot of youngsters playing the cowboys (power abuse)

Stay away from this place... Look at the public servant survey and you will find this is the worst employer in the Canadian public sector to work for.

Culture of lies... Expect no career advancement... Lies, lies, lies, lies... Toxic environment... Will ask you to work injured... ... ... .... ... ...

Pros

Cons

No career advancement, worst management ever

Strict and Ambitious Workplace, Great for Career Development

A typical day consists of arriving at work and changing into the appropriate protective equipment and professional uniform. You spend the day interacting with travelers and goods attempting to cross the Canadian border from airports, cars, mail, boat, or trains. You encounter many dynamic and changing situations in which you work as a team with fellow officers to protect the country and the people who travel/live here. The training was specific and helpful, and the professional requirements placed upon yourself allow you to grow as an officer and employee.

Pros

Dynamic, always learning workplace.

Cons

Bureaucratic workplace.

Very disorganized

not a fun place at all to work. very dysfunctional. No one internally knows what to do or how to get anything done. It makes for the most frustrating place to work.

Very toxic work environment

They let anybody become a manager, even without the skills or background. It ls very bad. You have to be friends or sleep with the good person to get promoted or to access some special training or promotion. The pay and benefits are good. But the work/family life balance is not good. A lot of bullying and psychological harassment. You are eitherone of them or they are against you and will do anything to get you out. A lot of youngsters playing the cowboys (power abuse)

Fun place to work in and lots to learn!

This place is wonderful to work in. The daily job role was dynamic and always keeps you on your toes. Would definitely recommend for anyone starting their careers to work with the CBSA.

Great Workplace

Its is a great place to work and is a perfect career for someone interested in law enforcement and public policy. Many positions require shift work so keep that in mind.

test

Could be a great place to work, but when they allow upper management to fill positions and make decisions without any background experience. This hurts employees and cost more money

Very friendly and welcoming

Working with CBSA was a complete turn around from what other's had told me about working for the government. The team I was hired on was very welcoming and friendly. They encourage proper work/life balance and provide the means to do so with flexible work conditions, such as telework. They aren't stingy on bottle necking their employees, they openly encourage you to grow and to venture onto different teams if that's where your interests take you.

You need a strong stomach

Working at CBSA is not for the faint hearted. The culture has suffered for years and although work is underway to rebuild, it’s an uphill battle. There’s hope but one needs to be stubbornly optimistic and resilient

Pros

It’s government. Job stability.

Cons

Technology is still 5-10 years behind

One of the most dynamic places to work in government

No day is ever completely the same, many areas of the Agency's core business are fast-paced with applications to other industries and other government departments. Whether its Operations, Traveller's Program or Strategic Policy, working in the CBSA will exceed your expectations.

Student Officer

Loved the job, provided excellent experience for the future. Would recommend to any young student. Only down side: you have zero job security and feel constantly on edge about if you will still have a job tomorrow.

Union job with union rights and protections. Management in the Pacific Region is progressive and fair. There is a continuous learning culture and room for advancement.

Used to be a good Job

Wages and benefits good. Management not great. Enjoyed my career for first 30 years or so, but changes and politics made it less enjoyable and stressful in the latter part of career.
