Working at Campbell Construction was an interesting experience this past year. The hiring process was casual and the two individuals who interviewed me asked casual questions without an detail and put me on a job the next day which made the process easy to get working. However, working on some sites are better and more organized then others. However it is challenging to move up in the organization as there is no formal career path and it appears the owners son has been placed in a role due to his family name even though he has a drug addiction and drinking problem. There also seems to be a lot of reactionary decision making on some sites and employees are yelled at and not treated with respect especially if you are a woman. It was an interesting time working at the company, they have lots of work and union wages are great but it is poorly run and disorganized.

Do you want a competitive salary commensurate with experience?
A Christmas party that is not on Christmas eve?

Training?

RRSPs?

Go work somewhere else like Farmer, Knappett, Kenetic, Scansa, or any other construction company in Victoria.

Pros
Used to have lots of work
Cons
Disorganized job sites, no planning, have to ask for more pay all the time

Do not even bother working at this place every other job site is a complete gong show. There is some great coworkers, but the owners are cheap and pay below market wages. You only get a pension/retirement plan if you are in the union and will only give you an increase when people quit and owners get desperate. If you can get in the union, great. If you cant, get out because you will end up retiring with nothing. Says a lot about how the company cares more about nickel-and-diming everything rather than caring about the staff who actually do the work.
Pros
coworkers, lots of work
Cons
ownership, disorganization

Management should learn how to hire competent people and stop micromanaging when you show up on the job site making random decisions. how many times do we have to rebuild parts of a building due to mistakes and random decisions being made on the fly? stairs, walls, columns in the wrong place, at least it makes lots of work for us carpenters. the company is simply a group of good old boys who cant come up with a single new idea and cant plan ahead on any jobsite. stop running this company in such a bush league way and hire some people who actually know how to run a business
Pros
learn how to be complacent and not to care about your job
Cons
no leadership, no planning, no organization, family business with family politics, people in management with no experience, random people put in random positions, pay cheques messed up and missing hours

A complete gong show, the operations manager says one thing and staff do another and every site is a new mess. This can make things exciting and provide lots of work since staff have no defined rolls, but then you got to watch out not to get tossed under the bus. There is also no clear path for young staff looking to get promoted, no training and no guidance. Some great people to work with on site.
Pros
Co-workers
Cons

No planning and all reactionary decision making talking about how things used to be back in the day. They may be better than some other GCs in town, but thats like comparing the smell of one job site outhouse to another. All these companies will die with time as they continue to operate the same old way.
Pros
Lots of work
Cons
Family business with clueless family members

The company pays great and has lots of work but the hardest part about working here is learning to not care. No matter how hard you work or how much you want to improve the company management does not recognize your efforts and support the staff. Random decision making causes inefficient work and individuals are placed in roles where they do not have the appropriate leadership and technical skills. Poor communication on the job site kills morale and causes constant confusion. I watched stairs formed multiple times, windows and holes chipped out that were laid out due to lack of quality control and review. It is hard to come to terms with the overall poor organization when you take a lot of passion and pride in your work, but the company has lots of work and the union wages pay really good.

A great company to work at, comedy gold at its best! My favorite part is watching the revolving door if chaos. Nobody knows what's going on, there is no communication, I show up on a job site and then I'm headed to another one because someone quit or there was no planning. It's exciting, and you have lots of work cause you are always fixing mistakes. Is Campbell better than farmer? Well is going to the bathroom in the gorge better than behind a building...

Have you ever worked at company in a constant state of confusion? Well if you work here you will! Each job site you visit is different, which can make things exciting but for a company this old it makes you wonder if they really know what's going on. I worked on three sites and each one operated on it's own random way before going to aryze. After you switch to another company run by some young creative people you realize that these old companies will perish over time as their clients realize their incompetencies. Construction is changing and these other co the young companies are going to cha the industry while these old companies flounder around in a state of confusion. Or a developer will start their own company... Oh wait that's already happening...

Lots of micromanagement and confusion will guarantee you lots of work even if you have to build things a few times over and over again. seems to be some decent people in the company but they are handcuffed in their ability to make any changes.

Love working here there is never a dull day, due to the lack of planning and random decision making you never know what you are going to do so it is always exciting. I have worked on lots of buildings over the last few years and when you show up to the job site you would never know they had built a building before. One building you are doing it one way and then you jump on the next they have a new idea even more brilliant than the last one. This is a great learning experience as you get to see all the wonderful ways things can go wrong on a job site.
Pros
Lots of work due to constant fixing mistakes due to poor decision making and no planning
Cons
Never know where you are going to go or what to do next due to erratic behaviour

most usual days working with Cambell would be to just show up and already know what you were doing yesterday, as all your co workers will already be on the top level waiting for you. Personally, i learnt that safety is a must as a very green employee starting out, proper lifting, safely lifting and putting items down with care rather than careless. Management is tough, but at the same time... its a very stressful job but that doesn't always mean that we should take anger out on each-other. I found the hardest part of the job was keeping my calm while getting yelled at by a stranger who calls himself my boss, as you shouldn't abuse authority. by far the most enjoyable part of this job was your co workers because they are like brothers.

Working on site is tough, people eat lunch every day with dirty hands there is no standards and no washing stations until there was a pandemic. The leaders expect you to work, however they are no where to be found, show up on site, but you can't pickup your paycheck from the office and they will not be there to support you. Standards for site safety only show up after a few issues arise and there is no planning or awareness for the front line crews. Lots of people to boss you around, but nobody to lead your team, nobody to protect staff and the construction population. This is the calm before the storm and a site outbreak is only waiting to happen. With anxiety at an all time high and staff worried about infecting their family members it is a challenging time and whoever is the owner is not acting as leader and the developers are just as bad.

Worst ever company to work for.
The owner only cares about money

You can't trust co-workers

You can't trust management

This company cares more about production than safety.

The foremen are poorly trained and throw anyone under the bus to cover up their inability to lead/delegate and have no idea how about conflict resolution.

Job sites are sketchy as heck, no leadership during a crisis and no sense of safety or guidance. Having 200 guys crammed in a tower with no hand washing station, just a push soap dispenser with no water seems like a crisis waiting to happen. Worked on yates st and nobody is following protocol, no safety meetings, My super is not worried and an entitled uneducated fam member and basically forcing me to work or we gonna be fired unless the government shuts us down, despite being lots of people working close together. Let's be real, our industry is full of some of the most toxic and ignorant people who lack basic knowledge, information and overall awareness in the last 50 years, can we really expect them to act sensibly during a global pandemic?

Campbell is an inclusive employer that promotes employees with learning disabilities and enjoy riding the slopes during work hours. It is one of the few places where you can have an addiction and get hired and promoted especially if you are a famly member! The company does not value intelligence and education but that is a comon trait among all family members. The bar is low and arrogance is high!
Pros
Repairing old work, rebuilding forms, fixing supers mistakes
Cons
Leadership, Gm, organization

Don't drink too much of the coolaid probably good reason people are quoting the company. Who's next?
Pros
Lots of work, cool projects, chip, patch and rebuild
Cons
Inexperienced staff, no training, no planning
