Productive and Fun

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
A typical day at work starts at 3:30pm after school hours. Depending on the area that you're assigned and depending on how many hours you work in a day (it varies to 4 Hours Part Time,3 Hours Part Time and 8 Hours Full Time) the more hours the more area that you need to cover, you're assigned specific areas that you have to maintained everyday, that includes multiple classrooms, washrooms and hallways. from disinfecting the classroom tables, sweeping and mopping, as well as replenishing paper towels/toilet paper in certain classrooms and hand soaps. I learned a lot in terms of time management within this job, that's why it is very important to keep up with your day to day tasks so that you don't fall behind if certain accidents happen in certain areas especially in the washrooms, trust me you never know what you'll walk into after school hours, especially in the washrooms :) make sure to replenish everything and double check them so that you don't have to worry about them and just focus on cleaning and disposing of trash as your night goes on. Workplace culture's great within the Public School Board, everyone is very helpful and supportive of each other and always there to lend a helping hand. The hardest part of the job I would say would be when Winter Season comes and when Summer season is on, shovelling the snow will put your body to work for sure, but that only works for employees who works Full time and have undergone the training and safety, there are certain tasks that a Part time worker is not allowed to do and that includes shovelling the snow, a big chunk of the work -

Pros

Work Life Balance, Benefits, Long Term

Cons

Winter Season

Poor pay, poor union, lack of support, lay offs, poor supervisors, lack of flexibility

A system broken from within.Run away. Pay is poor, no raise or new collective agreement in years. Too top heavy. Lack of flexibility. More and more demands and expectations without compensation. Supervisors that are power hungry but ineffective. The people on the front lines take much responsibility on that is not in their job description. Poor moral and lack of engagement with many staff. Unhappy staff at all levels.

Casual Educational Assistant

Casual EA on-call. Good starting salary No medical benefits. No guaranteed number of hours per week. Difficult to get a contract at a school, and if you do it will be 15 hours a week. 30 hour contracts are gold dust. As a casual EA be prepared to get a wake up call at 6am, sometimes with short notice to get to a job. Difficult if you have a little one to get to school or daycare. Really hard to build relationships and connections with students, teachers and parents, because you will be working in a different school everyday. Most school staff are pretty cold towards casual EA'S because you are only there for the day. You have to build up your seniority at CBE and so don't expect to get chosen for internal job posting should they arise. Most casual EA's have a second job to support income. Finally, if you are a casual EA you will not get any support with professional development.

Pros

Good starting salary.

Cons

All of what I wrote above.

Compensation should be greater but good company to work for

I worked as an Educational Assistant for several years, and reached the top of the pay scale. I do feel that the pay structure should be realistic in the sense of increments for staff who have reached the top of the pay scale, as it has not changed in many years. Pay is fair when compared to compensation at other school boards for the same job. The job itself varies depending on what school you work at. I worked at a special setting school that supported children with complex disabilities. It was a fantastic place to be, and the children were wonderful. It's all about perspective and what you put into it, is what you will get back.

Excellent work if you have kids

Worked 2&1/2 hrs per day, helping children in the classroom which was extremely rewarding and building relationships with them during lunch. Loved it there and was sad I had to leave as we moved province. Many opportunities and encouragement to progress and move upwards.

Pros

Benefits; health plus training discounts

Cons

None

Great job if you don't want pay advancements, steady hours or a secure place of employment

A typical day is busy with lots of activity. If you're bored easily you'll love your job working with the kids. There's never or rarely a dull moment. The management can vary from school to school, but mostly they are good. The workplace culture is becoming very social justice driven, especially in high school. If you are not a liberal or are a religious person be prepared to be ridicule and mocked. But don't worry, it won't be to your face. The most enjoyable aspect of the job is definitely the kids. Overall, if you want to work for the CBE your primary focus has to be on your work with the kids and not the company or the salary.

Pros

Summers off, great health benefits and off early enough to be home with your kids.

Cons

Summers off with no pay, never having a secure placement or hours. Possibility of cut hours, program closure or laid off completely

Flexible hours, but not many benefits

The hours are flexible, but the days can be stressful especially when the schools bounce you around from class to class (usually for vacancy positions). The staff can either be very cold or super nice, depending on the school that you're at. You may end up subbing for years before you get considered for full time, and it's nearly impossible to get your permanent certificate if you're only a substitute.CBE has been unsympathetic towards subs during COVID. Considering the scare with the pandemic especially during the first isolation period, it had severely affected my mental health (and I'm sure many others), which was reflected in the amount of days that I worked. The interim reviews they had sent out do not consider mental health as a factor in performance. As a sub you also do not get sustaining benefits that apply towards seeing a psychologist on a weekly/monthly basis.

Pros

Flexible hours, challenging, good work/life balance

Cons

Can be hectic, staff can be cold, difficult to move up, not many benefits for mental health

Great company to work with

Nice to work with the company and people I'm with on my assigned school. The environment is light and the job is not so heavy. Teamwork was observed and great benefits even though you work part-time.

Pros

Benefits

Cons

short hours for part-time and long wait for FT position

Fun place to work

Fun place to work where there are a lot of jobs. Days can be long, but it is worth it to make sure that the kids are learning what they are supposed to be learning.

Love it

Supportive with lots of variety, the only drawbacks are no full time hours and job placement is dependent on the school's funding. Union positions. Unpaid summers and school holidays off

Lots of rewards

Loved working with the students. Disparity between schools is challenging. Health benefits in organization are handy. Joining the union is mandatory

UNFAVORABLE for career development

Being in a school setting the most eventful is the ahah moment when a student "gets the concept" that is being taught ! What I have learnt is unless ur boss / principal is in your FAVOR, u can not survive in CBE! Higher management does have few flaws in terms they fail to offer the moral training to second level staff under them that always consider CBE priorities over their personal / school priorities. Thus all the managing problems arise when second level managers only consider their smaller priorities over the more wider and broader priorities in terms of planning / organising etc … Thus always "Please" ur BOss OR ELSE U ARE SCREWED . one wont even get the basic benefits that are mentioned in ur plan. one will not get to do ur professional development if u fail to have good relation ship and appease ur boss . Hardest part is training not being appropriate to second level managers . Most hard working grass root staff is not appreciated . day to day is stressful due to working with highly special needs students .workculture is depending on each school or department

Pros

on paper great benefits plan . some managers / principals are really very very awesome

Cons

some how need to fix the flaws, esp at least train Principals / dept manager to always keep system priority top most

Great place to work

I really enjoy my work that I have being doing with the CBE. I work on the casual roster but am still working in a full time capacity. I don't get benefits which is unfortunate, however the annual raise and vacation pay is always appreciated.

Pros

Able to work full time while subbing

Cons

No benefits

Diverse place to work at with great benefits.

workplace culture really differs from school to school you work in. It also trickles down from frontline administration or your immediate supervisors and the teachers you work with. That dynamic shifts from school to school so definitely having a strong characteristic as an employee or as a support staff with good communication skills help to clear the lines of communication. When working with for the CBE, the pros and cons are just as even. The families are diverse which can be great. The variety and spectrum of coverage of work can be a lot but also simplified. The support you will receive from the CBE is quite tremendous. They provide great benefits, pension and even a support program not just concentrating with work but for your regular life. A bit of downfall is only having to work 30 hours as a maximum full-time hours presented to a support staff. The summers are also unemployment season, so definitely be prepared to apply for EI and look for temporary work during 2 to 3 months of no school.

Pros

summers off, holidays off, great benefits, great pension plan, good outside work-life support with programs and outreach, diverse community

Cons

job hours for next school year is never definite- depends on enrolments, summers off means no pay- EI and look for temp jobs.

Many perks but much favoritism

Love working with children, the pay and benefits are typically great and all the time off is incredible. But. It's usually quite difficult to advance in positions and though it might be denied, there is definitely favoritism and inside outs that the average employee may not realize. Who you know helps your career.

Pros

Benefits, pay, time off

Cons

Difficult advancement
