Meaningful work. Practical classes. Coaching not just lecturing.
Faculty (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 4 October 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedNice working with students on practical skills. Work is meaningful. Able to work independently, but also lots of opportunities to collaborate with other instructors. Education is practical. Opportunities to coach students on simulated and real industry projects. Marking season is busy, but nice summer break to refresh.
Pros
Independent with opportunities to collaborate. Focused on helping students.
Cons
Independence and freedom are slowly being lost.

High turnover rate and not fair to contract employees
Program Coordinator (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 1 June 2022
All difficult tasks would assign to contract employees, only permanent employees can enjoy work life balance. Contract employees are not allowed to work from home, but permanent employees only.

Benefits are great here. You can get a hold of the benefits package online through their website before you even start to get an idea of what is offered.

Jobs at British Columbia Institute of Technology
School of Health Sciences
Instructor (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 19 June 2020
People quit their manager, not their job and nowhere is this more the case than the BCIT School of Health, Manager; Diagnostics. This manager rewards, promotes and supports those with a poor work ethic and lack teaching credentials, those who complain and are the source of creating a toxic work environment. This manager casts aside, undermines and disposes of instructors who work hard and are loyal to the organization with documented positive student feedback.
I have personally witnessed colleagues crying in meetings with this manager present, verbal abuse and harassment both in-person and online. All this behaviour goes on under the watchful eye of the Dean of the School of Health and senior leadership who do absolutely nothing to address the issues. The School of Health Sciences is the most toxic work environment I have ever been a part of.
On an organizational level, BCIT is incredibly resistant to change and more often, change is obstructed. Idea sharing is discouraged. The BCIT learning environment has not changed in decades.
How this toxic culture continues in this time of change and awareness of workplace bullying and harassment boggles my mind.
Pros
Students
Cons
Soul crushing, toxic environment

Recreation Services Assistant
Recreation Services Assistant (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 26 February 2020
Slow paced environment. Flexibility and vacation perks are great. Not much work to do. No possibility for advancement. Team is great but management does not take into fact that the decisions they make are what is best for the department and how they affect the staff that deal with front line situations.

Reputable Organization
Energy Specialist (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 10 January 2020
Great organization to work for. Good for resume building.
It is a large organization so it was often difficult to get projects done within a reasonable time as their systems are beaurocratic and inefficient.
Cons
Beuraucratic

Poor/toxic work culture
Faculty Member (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 13 December 2019
High turnover at the management/leadership level, many people fired during my time here. BCIT has an aging workforce that obstructs change, they are not open at all to new ideas. If you are young and have new ideas to share, this is not the workplace for you.
Pros
Education/professional development fund
Cons
No time to use fund for professional development, not open to any type of change or idea sharing

Good Place to work but..
Operations Manager (Current Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 22 February 2019
Overall a good place to work if your priorities are a consistent, low stress, low innovation work day.
However, if you are looking to constantly innovate and take initiative and learn, it might not be the place for you.
Overachievers might get bored too soon.
Pros
work life balance, good colleagues, collegial
Cons
lack of strategic direction, too much old blood and old ways of thinking

Excellent work environment
Railroad Rules Instructor (Former Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 9 February 2019
Was an exciting and challenging place to work at, no dull moment. Excellent Managers. From my point of view, I really enjoyed training new students for a career on the Railway making good money and enjoying all benefits a Company and Unions can afford to give.

Flexible schedules
Server/Cashier (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 14 January 2019
BCIT offers a lot of part-time programs. Students can take classes in the evening, weekends. This helps a lot for people who work during day time. I hope BCIT could offer more program choices and focuses on improving students employment rate.

Terrible work culture and coworkers
Staff tech (Former Employee) - BC - 29 April 2018
If you enjoy coworkers smiling in front of you and then behind your back talking smack about you, join BCIT. I worked in an area that is supposed to be dictated by your own work pace but that was quickly thrown out the window. Be careful of the your coworkers here, salary is okay and work is easy enough. Would have made a wonderful permanent job if it wasn’t for the work culture here represented by the awful culture and disrespect.
Pros
Easy work, salary is ok
Cons
Work culture, coworkers disrespecting you
