No room for advancement
Manager (Former Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 24 October 2023
No room for advancement. Glass ceiling. Complaints and concerns about conduct are not taken seriously by management. Pension is good but health benefits are lacking.
Cons
Health benefits aren't up to industry standard. Pay is low.

Great place to work
Administrator (Current Employee) - Burnaby - 31 March 2023
My team is great, and I really like working here. Challenging work in a good way, lots of autonomy, and also support from my leaders. I like the hybrid model of some days in the office and some days at home.
Pros
Lots of professional development opportunties, pay is good and benefits are great.
Cons
Things are slow to move forward

Its alright
Campus Tour Guide (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 14 March 2023
Min Wage. Supervisors micromanage. Sometimes people don't show up. Expect to walk alot on your feet. Ok for someone who wants to have a little bit of money while studying.

Rigid and broken unionized school
Operations Assistant (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 12 February 2023
It is hard to make changes in a unionized environment. Some people who have been there are not doing anything. Learning to be incapable and lazy, so your manager will not assign extra work to you. It is not fair for some new employees, but that is the rule there. There is also a high turnover rate. People come and leave, so it is hard to get " useful " information from people. You need to make your own judgment and do lots of research.
Pros
good benefits package
Cons
management is not accountable

Little growth in pay and advancement
Instructor (Part-time) (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 28 December 2022
It was an decent place to work, flexible schedule in part time studies was fantastic. However, even teaching full time in part time studies is not a decent income for my skills, education and experience.

Great institution but pay is low for part-time work
Part-time Lecturer (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 3 October 2022
In the part-time studies program, it is difficult for instructors to make a living as the money is so-so and there are very few benefits with a lack of job security. However, you do get a reasonable amount of freedom in your teaching which is nice. You don't have someone breathing down your neck at your work as other institutions have. I still say that overall BCIT is a good place to work, it just suffers the same issues as many other universities.
Pros
Great students, nice campus, some freedom
Cons
No job security in PTS, no benefits, so-so pay

Great place to work with good benefits
General Labourer (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 5 January 2022
Benefits are great here. You can get a hold of the benefits package online through their website before you even start to get an idea of what is offered.

Dedicated Staff but an Institution that is Difficult to Make Change In
Unspecified Management (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 14 May 2021
I was fortunate in my role to meet many that are dedicated to teaching and learning. Not all embraced bringing forward ideas and experiences of an outside institution which made change very slow to impossible. Excluded from key meetings/discussions, making it impossible to meet expectations. Frequently expected to work late evenings, weekends and on vacations to meet multi changing deadlines.
Pros
Salary and some amazing dedicated staff
Cons
Strong stance on how it was - not how it could be

Part time instructors have very little connection to rest of school and staff.
INSTRUCTOR (Current Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 24 January 2020
I love teaching. But after years of working for this school, you get burned out over how many unpaid hours you end up working in order to get the marking and prep done. The hourly wage is great, but that is all you ever get paid. I think the students suffer then as instructors stop wanting to put the extra time in to modify or update their courses as it means more unpaid work.

Great environment for driven people
Store supervisor - Specialty retail store (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 4 November 2019
BCIT offers competitive opportunities and many benefits. I took advantage of the education included, the classes were a benefit to all employees that maintained good attendance.

Excellent work environment
Railroad Rules Instructor (Former Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 9 February 2019
Was an exciting and challenging place to work at, no dull moment. Excellent Managers. From my point of view, I really enjoyed training new students for a career on the Railway making good money and enjoying all benefits a Company and Unions can afford to give.

Great place to work and grow your career but don't expect a fulltime position
Instructor (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 18 November 2018
Great place to work and being an instructor. PTS is better than FTS due to level of flexiblity to customize the course outline. However, don't expect a full time position due to senior instructors not retiring and most of the departments have stopped hiring on full time basis due to various reasons - enrollement, benefits, others
Pros
Awesome place.
Cons
Need to align courses better with workplace requirements

Terrible senior management
Administrative Assistant (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 22 August 2018
Student Services Management are terrible. It used to be a good place to work, but over the last few years has gone downhill. No appreciation or respect. The office is not managed properly and has become toxic.
Management wonders why the Employee Engagement Survey produced such low numbers in all aspects. Sometimes money just isn't enough.
Pros
Pay and benefits
Cons
Management and toxic work environment
