Great place to grow
Business Development Manager (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 12 August 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedBCIT provides various learning and career opportunities to employees, faculty and management. In order to be familiar with the work, I advise new employees to experience a full academic calendar to get a full picture of the role and responsibilities.

Some good, some bad
Foundation (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 17 June 2023
The current state of our division is rough. Employee turnover is at an all-time high, and management does not seem to care about regular employees. The hybrid schedules are not flexible like the company advertises them to be. In fact, they are pretty rigid. Engagement and moral are poor, hopefully things get better.

Great students
Instructor (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 8 June 2023
The most enjoyable part of the job is the interaction with students. The online system they use is a bit overwhelming at first. I wish the classrooms are cleaned more frequently.

Great
Maintenance Worker (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 8 April 2023
Working at BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology) has been a truly rewarding experience. The institution's commitment to excellence in education is reflected in the supportive and collaborative work environment that exists among faculty, staff, and students. As an employee, I have found BCIT to be a great place to work, with a strong sense of community and a focus on continuous learning and professional development. The institution provides numerous opportunities for employees to expand their knowledge and skills through workshops, training sessions, and other professional development activities.

Great place to work
Administrator (Current Employee) - Burnaby - 31 March 2023
My team is great, and I really like working here. Challenging work in a good way, lots of autonomy, and also support from my leaders. I like the hybrid model of some days in the office and some days at home.
Pros
Lots of professional development opportunties, pay is good and benefits are great.
Cons
Things are slow to move forward

Rigid and broken unionized school
Operations Assistant (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 12 February 2023
It is hard to make changes in a unionized environment. Some people who have been there are not doing anything. Learning to be incapable and lazy, so your manager will not assign extra work to you. It is not fair for some new employees, but that is the rule there. There is also a high turnover rate. People come and leave, so it is hard to get " useful " information from people. You need to make your own judgment and do lots of research.
Pros
good benefits package
Cons
management is not accountable

Little growth in pay and advancement
Instructor (Part-time) (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 28 December 2022
It was an decent place to work, flexible schedule in part time studies was fantastic. However, even teaching full time in part time studies is not a decent income for my skills, education and experience.

Jobs at British Columbia Institute of Technology
in Burnaby, BCDepends on your department
Tradesman (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 10 November 2022
Due to cut cost, some department doesn’t have enough money to hire full-time employee when the senior folks retired. It creates lots of workload for the existing employee and some of the coworkers takes advantage of sick leave, it really shift the workload to others. The manager don’t really fix the problem but let it continues to happen.

Great place for Online continuing education
Bachelor of Health Sciences (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 21 October 2022
Very flexible learning style, great for those trying to maintain a career and add additional education to their resume. Would recommend BCIT for other allied health continuing education programs.

Great institution but pay is low for part-time work
Part-time Lecturer (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 3 October 2022
In the part-time studies program, it is difficult for instructors to make a living as the money is so-so and there are very few benefits with a lack of job security. However, you do get a reasonable amount of freedom in your teaching which is nice. You don't have someone breathing down your neck at your work as other institutions have. I still say that overall BCIT is a good place to work, it just suffers the same issues as many other universities.
Pros
Great students, nice campus, some freedom
Cons
No job security in PTS, no benefits, so-so pay

High turnover rate and not fair to contract employees
Program Coordinator (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 1 June 2022
All difficult tasks would assign to contract employees, only permanent employees can enjoy work life balance. Contract employees are not allowed to work from home, but permanent employees only.

Toxic union work environment
HVAC-R Mechanic Apprentice (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 17 October 2021
Toxic union work environment, entitled older workers refuse to work and have little ambition. Wages are beyond low. Leadership from management is non existent, often with the wrong leader in place. Do not work here.

Dedicated Staff but an Institution that is Difficult to Make Change In
Unspecified Management (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 14 May 2021
I was fortunate in my role to meet many that are dedicated to teaching and learning. Not all embraced bringing forward ideas and experiences of an outside institution which made change very slow to impossible. Excluded from key meetings/discussions, making it impossible to meet expectations. Frequently expected to work late evenings, weekends and on vacations to meet multi changing deadlines.
Pros
Salary and some amazing dedicated staff
Cons
Strong stance on how it was - not how it could be
