Teaching at Brandon University is very laid back. Colleagues are friendly and helpful, and often very social. The hardest part of this job is probably that you're on your own for course curriculum development. Management seems to assume that you know your job already and don't really interfere unless you ask for feedback.

This is the way it is always done..... the culture is “good enough” service and no staff diversity. The on
The only Indigenous people work in Native Studies and Fine Art! Really...there are writers, scientists, people with doctorates..... but BU is stereotypically slow to create change.

Management is subpar, HR routinely botches and alters protocol to suit their needs. Turnover is high. Pay is on par with job position, however it is not worth the stress.

If you know what is expected of you and do it, you will have a fine time. The people are good and the work is reasonable. I believe the amount they pay their TAs is reasonable.

Beautiful campus but terrible management resulting in toxic workplace envuronment throughout many offices. Turnover is high for an institution this small (5+ higher ups left this year alone, some after only being there a couple of years). Preferential treatment and favouritism play a large part in advancement and acceptance. Apply only if you have thick skin.

I only worked here for 2 weeks on a contract to help a friend with their field research for their Master's program. After the two weeks there was no opportunity for continued employment.

experience was excellent......perhaps the Institution was rather administratively top heavy. Workload was at times excessive, with little or no direction afforded from senior admin.

Working in a public sector, post-secondary institution provides a lot of valuable experience. For someone entering this type of workplace from the private sector, there can be an adjustment period.
Pros
Good salary and benefits
Cons

Great environment and friendly people. However, if you are looking for a full-time position that isn't teaching, and revolves around research, you won't find that here. Most research is assisted by part-time undergraduates and graduate students taking the Masters program. Management is always friendly and willing to help in whatever way they can. Co-workers are willing to go out of their way to teach and assist with required duties. Overall, great place!
Pros
Flexible, caring
Cons
Mostly part-time work

a typical day included summarizing literature from the Brandon University database, analyzing data and inputting data into excel. I learned a lot about how to synthesize large articles.

The small class sizes are really awesome. All the profs are pretty helpful in teaching you what you need to know. I really like the geography program. I quite enjoyed working as a Lab Assistant in the first semester. Second semester I am now working as a marker for a different geography class, where I basically have to mark the assignments and tests. I really enjoy it.
