Productive and fun workplace
Event Coordinator (Former Employee) - Toronto, ON - 26 January 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedGreat company to work for with lots of room for growth. Management is excellent and the events team was organized, efficient, and a fun team to be on. Hours can be long but that’s apart of being in the events industry. The work culture at BLG definitely stands out and the majority of people at the firm were great to work with. BLG are definitely leaders in diversity and inclusion and I would recommend working there to anyone.
Pros
Room for growth, great environment/teams, nice office
Cons
Long hours, low-tech, wasteful meetings

Productive and fun workplace
Administrative Assistant (Former Employee) - Toronto, ON - 20 May 2023
Amazing experience, staff was very friendly, and supervisors were nice to work with. The work-life balance is pretty nice, standard 9 to 5 but typically you can get away with heading out early.

Collaborative environment but slow in technological progres
BI Analyst and Application support (Former Employee) - Toronto, ON - 25 January 2023
I worked a developer analyst in BLG. The work life balance is good. The systems are legacy and requires a lot of patching at times. The management is good.office is very good and nicely maintained. After Covid all employees can work from home especially business services.
Pros
Free lunches and annual parties.
Cons
Technology

Travail motivant inexistant
Adjointe juridique / Legal assistant (Former Employee) - Montréal, QC - 12 October 2022
Pros
Bonne atmosphère et compagnes de travail sympathiques.
Cons
Travail inexistant et non motivant.

Great, wonderful staff, managers kinda tried too but upper management didn't care/couldnt do much
Technical Support Analyst (Former Employee) - Toronto, ON - 11 August 2022
Amazing co-workers, (one stellar upper manager), wonderful back-end staff and genuinely caring/good lawyers (with a single bad apple, the shouty guy who punches walls!) but staff burnout was a thing and a lot of staff/lawyers quit. Support staff like me tended to stay but there were many little things management could have done to keep staff happy that just never happened (Work From Home!). Many staff commuted long hours for years, if not decades with no attempt to smooth things for them (on-call phone started ringing at 6:01 when the phone system could easily have been set to accommodate the two hours we were supposed to have to get home and get a bite after a full 9hr work day). Also zero advancement unless someone retired and ancient/non-existent IT tooling with no hint of automation or productivity thinking. Fight to get a testing environment, patching/update management, hardware and software auditing, laptop imaging, etc. Co-workers made it all worthwhile though (at-least for a while). Fun events (golf, dinners, etc) though.

Supportive and fun place to work
Billing Coordinator (Former Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 31 July 2022
I only got to work over a busy period, but enjoyed the people and my time there very much. Was given all the necessary tools and guidance to do my job. I wish I was given more responsibilities as I am capable of a lot more but understand that my position was just to help out over a busy period.
Pros
Team building experiences, $500 annual home office allowance
Cons
Contract and no full-time positions offered in many cases

Jobs at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP

Limited opportunity for advancement, even for lawyers
Lawyer (Current Employee) - Toronto, ON - 17 December 2021
I was very disappointed in my time at BLG. They talk a big game when it comes to caring about women in law and diversity and yet their equity partnership is overwhelming pale, male and stale. So many talented women keep leaving the firm and Racialized lawyers are not given a chance to succeed. The workload is also ridiculous and hiring a new person takes forever.
Pros
Mediocre pay
Cons
Culture, workload, no loyalty to its people, cares only about the numbers.

Great salary & benefits - Lack of Communication
Administrative Assistant (Former Employee) - Ottawa, ON - 15 January 2021
Great team environment. Colleagues are willing to work together to complete tasks. Lots of turnover because of the lack of communication within managers.

Terrible pay and awful management
Administrative Assistant (Former Employee) - Ottawa, ON - 25 November 2020
I hated my time there. The pay was awful, the open door policy doesn’t exist and the moral at the firm was awful. They have no loyalty to their staff but treat the lawyers really well. Support staff aren’t appreciated.

Great benefits but office politics is too much
Kitchen Manager/Chef/Event Caterer (Former Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 8 October 2020
In my time at blg I experienced a lot of bullying from managers when I spoke out against being bullied out of my position. Managers here will hire someone to take over your position without letting you go or moving you somewhere else first, leaving you feeling like you have no idea what your job is anymore. Then they wait for you to react and then blame it on you. It's a cut throat work environment, only apply here if you can handle it. Benefits and pay are great, Idk if it's really worth your soul though.
Pros
$$, no weekends, benefits
Cons
They're literally the devil

Senior Manager, Finance (Former Employee) - Toronto, ON - 30 August 2020
Workplace normal is a formal attire, but social interactions are fairly relaxed. Colleagues are friendly. Firm is very flexible regarding working onsite or from home.

All about productivity and not much support for law clerks and lower paid support staff.
Law Clerk (Former Employee) - Toronto, ON - 2 June 2020
Most of the time it depended on the partner whom you worked for and if they were there for you.
There was preferential treatment to some employees and others who worked very hard didn't have the benefit of someone treating them fairly.

Fantastic, highly-skilled and motivated lawyers and staff. The sky is the limit on challenging, meaningful work. I never felt anything but fulsome support.
