Toxic environment, total disgrace to journalism
Editor (Former Employee) –  Victoria, BC7 May 2019
At Black Press, it's not a matter of, "are you happy with your job" but "be thankful you have a job."

Whether you are a starting or veteran journalist, do yourself a big favour and look somewhere else for work. Employees (editorial staff in particular) are treated as sub-human savages; underpaid to below the poverty level and overworked to the point that having a life at all is just impossible.

Oh, and there are daily story counts, so if you don't produce at least 20 to 80,000 stories a day (rehashed online garbage of other online garbage) you will be hearing from management. Remember, quantity is key at BP, much like those cheap plastic toys that arrive on shipping containers in the millions every hour.

Speaking of management. Black Press executives rule like a dictatorship; speak your mind of any concern to ethics, workplace safety or better pay, and you will be humiliated, ignored or punished in some fashion. Seriously, it's like they took leadership notes straight from Stalin's handbook.

If I had a choice to mine salt in Siberia or work at Black Press, I'd earnestly take salt mining in Siberia in a heartbeat.
Pros
Zero.
Cons
No overtime, long hours, low pay, tyrannical management

definitely recommend for young kids

Not Good
Former editorial staff (Former Employee) –  Victoria, BC3 November 2018
Where to begin with how bad this company was to work for? Rock bottom wages, huge workload, frequent firings / terminations, high staff turnover and management that views the editorial side of the operation as a drain on shareholders returns. I worked with many awesome reporters and editors there, almost all of whom had the good sense to move on a long time ago.
Pros
You get to have bylines in a print media publication, sometimes if there's a management meeting they'll offer you some of the leftover pizza
Cons
You are expected to sacrifice your personal and financial life for poverty level wages.

Paper Carrier (Former Employee) –  Mission, BC1 August 2018
I enjoyed my time with Black press. having a paper route is a great starter job, but it can get a little bit boring as you get older and your friends are all working at places like McDonalds

Newspaper Deliverer (Current Employee) –  Delta, BC2 July 2018
I usually did the route with my family. A typical route usually takes about forty to sixty minutes. The most enjoyable part of the job is when we finished.

Was ok to work for
Paper Delivery (Former Employee) –  Victoria, BC30 June 2018
Working for them was ok. Papers were always delivered on time and on the same 2 days a week. Hardest part of the job was trying to get the papers, in the rain and snow, to customers houses without them getting wet or ruined.

Great Work Atmosphere
Multimedia Consultant (Former Employee) –  Red Deer, AB11 June 2018
just to clarify they do not have computers from the 90s, as a previous rep we were using brand new ipads to complete our sales process on. secondly the designer hubs are not sweat shops and remain with in Blackpress and North America. This is a great place to work a challenging 9 -5 monday to friday job with a really good life to work balance. The staff at the Advocate are very friendly laid back bunch and they make terrific co-workers.
Pros
free tickets to local events

Find another place
RED DEER ADVOCATE (Former Employee) –  Red Deer, AB18 March 2018
Management is dysfunctional and they have gone through at least 20 different sales reps. I feel like they are wanting to shut the paper and combine with the Red Deer Express. Not to mention the office is so dirty and some computers from the 90's are still being used.
Pros
None
Cons
Long Hours, No compliments, cheap.

Last resort
Head operator (Former Employee) –  Alberta28 February 2018
Blackpress took over the original profitable company that treated it's employees like they mattered, and ran it into the ground, and pretty much ruined half of the staffs lives through inept management. If you have pride and a sense of self worth ,respect, and perhaps a goal in life to succeed?? It would be the last place I would apply. If you are desperate and enjoy being taken advantage of ?? This could be the company for you.

Unrealistic expectations, poor resources
Advertising Consultant (Former Employee) –  Abbotsford, BC30 January 2018
If you’re looking to put out maximum effort, only to be told that you just need to push a bit harder to reach your minimum target then this is a great place to work. Minimal supports are in place, technology is sub par, wage is laughable. On site designers were terminated a year ago so now all ads are designed in regional hubs (sweat shops) by low paid and overworked non designers who provide ads laden with errors. The time it takes to make a straightforward ad is ridiculous and prevents anyone from success. Management expectations are extremely unrealistic.
Pros
Coworkers are great to commiserate with
Cons
Underpaid, under appreciated, relentless demands for more effort

Meat Department Clerk (Former Employee) –  Langley, BC25 January 2018
Working as News Paper Delivery, is not an easy job....especially during poor weather and holiday seasons. Wages vs work is also very low, does not even equal minimum wage.
Pros
Can be employed with parental approval at 13 years of age, often get small bonus items such as passes to rec center.
Cons
Heavy news papers, long paper routes for little to no money

Newspaper Carrier (Former Employee) –  Abbotsford, BC5 January 2018
It was a newspaper carrier job. Not much to say about it. It sucked sometimes, the pay was bad, but it was good for me as a younger child to learn about working hard

It was my first job delivering papers - it was a learning experience. It taught me that I needed to do my job rain or shine. The best part of the job was earning my own money.

Great people to work with, terrible upper management
Ad Designer (Former Employee) –  Vernon, BC10 November 2017
This company undervalues their design staff. Underpaid, paying less for educated graphic designers than Pizza Hut pays their pizza cooks. They literally think that designers are "playing" on the computer.

The staff is great, friendly, very fun to be around but upper management is oblivious to what requirements are needed for those working on the ground floor. Nicknamed the "sweatshop", most designers are unable to take breaks, or lunches due to the department being understaffed.

Pizza day once a month, but the company doesn't pay for it...

Too many major changes to the programs being used monthly. These changes are made by upper management without discussing them with the design staff. So, a new expensive program is paid for without testing it first, and then management finds that the program has slowed down production in every aspect of the newspaper. Could have been avoided if they simply spoke with their design and sales staff. Management thinks they know design, they don't.

No room to grow as a designer. Very difficult to get a raise / promotion.

Hardest part of the job, deadlines. Understaffed creative department leads to overtime which leads to overworked, unhappy staff.

Most enjoyable part of the job is the people. The camaraderie is palpable. Great group setting to work in, easy to get along with people who are like minded about upper management.
Pros
Bottom floor staff are friendly and fun.
Cons
Low pay, undervalued, underappreciated by upper management

Delivery Driver (Current Employee) –  Victoria, BC5 July 2017
Simple, you get the papers out. You can make your own hours for the most part and use your own vehicle. If you can drive and love physical work, go at it.
