BC Public Service Employee Review

Very laidback work environment and good for people who don’t like pressure or tight timelines

Only get paid for 7 hours a day. Employer doesn’t seem to concerned about actual hours worked as the work life balance is the most important thing at this employer. Come in late and leave early is the norm here. Low pressure and really relaxing environment.

Pros

One hour lunches, very flexible work hours and deadlines.

Cons

Low pay and only 7 hour workday.

Youth custody

I recently started working in youth custody and I couldn’t have made a better mid life decision. Don’t let the academic requirements scare you away. If you have common sense and want flex your communication skills then don’t hesitate to apply. Yes being an auxiliary is tough but they have been very accommodating as far as having to work another job as you work through the call board. Staff have been super supportive and working with the youth has been very rewarding.

Great work-life balance

Very relaxed compared to the stressful grind of consulting engineering offices. Great if you're starting a family or have young kids. No timesheet. Flexible work schedule. Lots of exciting projects. Not much technical mentorship as many senior engineers have retired. No financial incentive to perform well. Need to be internally driven to take advantage of opportunities. Need a personal road map for career growth. Have to wait for a retirement or departure to move upward in the same department, but it's not too hard to change Ministries or departments.
