Fun, stable, and engaging
Engineer (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 25 September 2022
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedBC Hydro is amazing place to work for non-skilled workers, given the time-off, benefits, job security and work-life balance. For engineers and other higher pay professionals, the salaries tend to be low compared to the private sector. The work itself is a lot of fun and the people who work there are a lot of fun to be around as well.

Micromanagement galore
CSR (Former Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 23 January 2023
Lots of micromanagement - you can do very well in your role but you will never be good enough and they will always focus on your negatives. Customers bully you and you have to take it. If you stand up for yourself will complain and have it marked against your record.
Cons
Horrible pay for the area

Insights into BC Hydro
Areas for improvement
- Fair pay for job
- Sense of belonging
- Trust in colleagues
Poor management/low salary
Senior Consultant (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 19 January 2023
I thought BC Hydro would be an excellent and challenging place to work, but after more than a year there, I'm deeply disappointed. Management doesn't care about issues and possible work-related problems - they want their numbers to look suitable for upper management. Nobody cares about the company. I'm worried that the whole system will fall apart in 10 years. Salaries are poor compared to the others. They have benefits and vacations, but young people need money now- not pension!
Pros
Vacation
Cons
Too many - poor management

Good Teamwork
Project Manager (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 24 September 2022
Supportive Managers. Teams were generally productive. Conflict was well managed. People on teams were generally smart and wanted to do a good job. Not to much competition amongst team members.
Pros
Good pay.

Typical Political Working Environment
Field Operations Procurement Lead (Former Employee) - Head office - 5 September 2022
The work can be extremely interesting and will test your knowledge in your skill set. If you’re lucky there will be travel to BCH worksites where you have the opportunity to learn more about the vast infrastructure in the province. All jobs have there downsides and each dept within Hydro has its share.

Fantastic place to work
Fleet Asset Planner (Current Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 20 June 2022
I have enjoyed my time at BC Hydro daily. Lots of room to grow and learn in a Crown Corporation. Management is very fair and transparent, and everyone on your team is supportive of each other.
Pros
Work Life Balance
Cons
Job Security - Contract

Recruitment Coordinator (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 30 April 2022

Fast paced and could be stressful at times.
Customer Service Representative - Billing Support (Current Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 22 April 2022
Been with the company since 2020. Could be a little stressful at times dealing with irate customers. You team lead or managers are there for support but you do feel like you’re out there alone at times to fend for yourself.

Jobs at BC Hydro
Great place to learn and grow but pay is below market.
Senior Engineer (Former Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 25 March 2022
Great company overall. Your career is dictated by your manager. If you get a good manager then you’re golden. Somewhat tough to cross train and learn other stuff while on the job. Moving within the company is easy until senior engineer level, need fair share of networking though. Pay can really improve. Senior Engineers get paid 89k which isn’t sustainable for Vancouver Area. No bonuses, meagre annual raises if they happen, no raises in the past two years. Good company as a first job or last job (only 5 years count for retirement).
Pros
Time off, defined pension, work life balance, job security.
Cons
Low pay. No bonus. Stagnant career growth after Senior engineer role.

Company is good but has some challanges
Team Lead (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 14 February 2022
Company is a large company and for the most part have good people. It does however have constant change in procedures, policies and reporting requirements. This causes undue stress on the employees to constantly change how work is being preformed.

Overall good environment. Great benefits and quite good job security if you get on.
Field Storekeeper (Former Employee) - Surrey, BC - 26 December 2021
BC hydro is one of the best companies to work with in BC. Generally a great group of people whom will be there until they retire. The pay is unionized and so the benefits are good as well if you like that type of security. It is pretty difficult to be fired as the union will support the employees. Overall, you would probably not leave this company if you landed a job there.

Great place to work.
Financial Analyst (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 23 November 2021
Many different work environments within accounting. Hard work and initiative will be rewarded. Opportunities abound. If there are areas which you don’t like, you can apply to work in other areas. Good work life balance.

Terrible place to work
Construction Officer (Former Employee) - Northern BC - 10 September 2021
In my 40 plus years in the utility industry this is absolutely the worse place I’ve ever worked. From incompetent and ineffective management to the abusive culture that exists within this organization makes it a very stressful place to work. At least that was my experience within the group I worked with. I can only describe it as the most toxic environment I’ve ever seen and would not recommend this company to anyone.

Terrible management and culture

Horrifying
Coordinator (Former Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 29 August 2020
Horrifying.
The manager for a science program had a theater degree, and is American, and it showed with inappropriate behaviour, continually erroneous reports monthly, and conduct that violated crown policy. She was a bully, and despite being obese, felt the need to insult others, including their appearance, to try and boost her need for attention.

À Vancouver, très bonne atmosphère de travail.
communication protection and control technologist (Former Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 24 July 2020
Pros
Formation
Cons
Manque de support technique en Protection & Controle

Old Boys Club
M1 Manager (Former Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 27 June 2020
At BC Hydro its not what you know but who you know. Most people over worked and under paid. You have your regular job then ask you to do other tasks.
Pros
Good benefits, nice co workers
Cons
Poor leadership, management ask to much and no recognition.
