More than just a food server
My favourite part of the job is the interaction with passengers. Although BC Ferries has a lot of perks, the job is not as easy as an on-looker might think. The crew member's job is primarily the safety of the passengers, and as such, has to be familiar with all the safety aspects. There are monthly or semi-monthly drills to keep them on their toes. The position starts as a seasonal (which may last for one, two or more seasons before advancement). This means on-call work, no scheduling summer activities, and possibly long tiring days for many days in a row. This is not a 5 days on/ 2 days off job. If you can make it past the first year and are lucky enough to advance to a more permanent position, the benefits are very good. But be prepared to work really hard, because this is by no means just, "what would you like to order?" at the cafeteria.

Good Summer job
Many students come and go every year, summer is the busiest season and they are always looking for seasonal workers. As a seasonal worker you don't get any benefits and the first year is hard because you're on an on-call basis. Beside all of the safety training and drills it's basic restaurant customer service work, though it gets really busy and stressful the pay is worth it for a student.
