If you are a trained professional (Management, Officer or Crew) then BC Ferries is best avoided. A highly toxic, trouble filled working culture plus gross mismanagement causes no end of problems.
Bc Ferries has a poor reputation in the Shipping industry for a very good reason: a bloated bureaucracy, appalling blame culture, bullying, extreme political correctness, ill thought out working practicies and philosophies plus low calibre management all help to fuel a deeply unpleasant working enviroment. I have met very few Senior Officers having joined from other Shipping companies that hadn't regretted thier decision within a year.
I've noticed a few people saying "free"travel passes and 1 saying unlimited..this isn't true ...you get a restricted number of passes for vehicles and family and these are all a taxable benefit.Travel with a vehicle does not guarantee you will get on as paying customers come first and pass users are on standby as per pass use agreement. Those required to travel for company business is different.
I want to work at BC Ferries because I worked formerly at the Port .Philippine Ports Authority is the place where I spent 17 years in the Operations /Logistics. I want to make use of what I've studied and learned in Port Management especially containerized Cargoes and that of the passenger vessels.
If you were in charge, what would you do to make BC Ferries a better place to work?
Continuesly eadeavor safety working practices, to keep working environment friendly.
When workers start families management should work to help make it possible to work part-time.
How inconsistent are the shifts for seasonal employment? I enjoy hiking and backpacking in the summer for 2+ days at a time. My plans can always be fit around work though I am worried that this job seems especially unpredictable. How do the shifts work? Are my concerns well-founded?
If you are on call, it will be difficult to hike and backpack around.
I live on mayne island and hoping to get a job with bc ferries Swartz Bay area and I was told that the company would hire Sidney residents only...is this correct? I am looking at ticket agent or office administration...any information would be greatly appreciated to this gulf island new comer.
Not correct, they'll hire if they see the need. Spring is the best time to try.
