Server (Former Employee) - Regina, SK - 5 January 2021
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by Indeedtoxic work environment in regina but the business itself is very nice and reputable. its pretty slow all of the time so sometimes you rely on hours more than tips.

Good serving job, bad people
Server (Former Employee) - Calgary, AB - 7 September 2023
Just like any other serving job if you've ever done it you know the routine. And this place wasn't bad for tips or anything like that but the former managers there were all about favorites and nepotism (although they'd never admit it) so not great people to work with.

Horrible workplace
Server (Current Employee) - Barrie, ON - 22 November 2020
management is very under qualified, bartenders are rude, stuck up and inconsistent with quality and speed, the servers are unorganized and flustered when it is busy (rare) It is almost never busy because it is dirty, and they have a bug problem in the back. I would never eat or even drink anything from here and feel terribly sorry for anyone who has digested anything out of this dirty unkept ‘restaurant’
Pros
Leaving the job
Cons
Everything about the place

Management
Server (Former Employee) - Winnipeg, MB - 3 April 2020
Management changed rather often. New employees were made supervisors and even full managers rather than loyal employees who have been there for years. Management tended to be very toxic towards staff. For example, sitting together at a table and talking badly about their employees rather than discussing issues in private. Team moral became very low due to this and many staff members began to leave. Overall most employees began to dread coming in to work because of this.

Bad Head Office
Server (Former Employee) - Barrie, ON - 16 October 2019
Owner doesn't care about you, and the people that have been there for years. Does the bare minimum as an employer, if you can avoid you should. Wished I did.

Great Team, High Expectations, Chill Job.
Server (Current Employee) - Thunder Bay, ON - 5 October 2019
The expectation first and foremost is that you be a team player, the place is exceptional to work at because there’s always a rush, always some fast paced work to get down to. Although your expectations are high, the team is there to keep each other afloat and help one another out. You end up feeling like you’re part of a family at the end of the day, and it doesn’t have the same feeling of dread to come into that other serving jobs do

Racist/Sexist/The WORST Owners and Management
Server (Former Employee) - Thunder Bay, ON - 17 February 2019
Management style is based on fear... fear of being fired, yelled at after a shift (or just in the middle of the restaurant during dinner service), or fear of being given a "bad section" of only 3 tables on your next few shifts because you made them upset.. Don't you dare book off time for a trip or mess up someones order because you will be met with the same aggressive and disrespectful reaction that has NO place in any workplace.
Experience: Had random shifts deleted from my timecard? Had to ask to get the hours re entered. Forcing staff members to pay for tables who walkout? No respect or benefits (of any kind) for long term employees.. Yelling, swearing, blaming everyone else, smashing plates (or a vacuum?)
The FOOD: all vegetables/potato are microwaved in plastic bags (duh, welcome to chain) but multiple times I watched a manager rinse off cooked chicken wings in the sink because someone put the wrong sauce on them, re-sauce them, and send them out to a table. Multiple times. Enjoy.
Workplace culture? Run your butt off so they can't catch you and make you cry
Cons
Racist/sexist management

Fun Workplace
Server (Former Employee) - Calgary, AB - 27 November 2018
Flexible work hours; I was able to work evenings and stay home with my children through the day hours.
Great team leaders; initiated different prizes for best up sales, or selling most of specific item
Fun atmosphere; everyone communicated well.

Should only be a temporary job
Server (Current Employee) - Calgary, AB - 17 August 2018
I have worked at applebees for 3 years. The management has always been the biggest issue for all of me and my coworkers. The managers are men and they are the type to feel the need to display their manliness and dominance by being doing the literal opposite of what anyone else other than another manager suggests.
They will make up fake rules out of no where. Example: A customer said the temperature it was too cold, so I turned the thermostat up a couple of degrees. After about two years of controlling the thermostat as I please, I was told by the manager that I must ask his permission to touch the thermostat very matter of factly. I never heard this rule in my existence prior before. This is a mild example but this is how things Would be.
Two out of the three of them say really inappropriate things making everyone feel uncomfortable. Wish I could take to HR but if I Google a contact there is literally no information.
Co-workers are pretty good and fun people, the are the few bad gals however.
Favouritism plays a huge role in the shifts you get, so you better learn how to suck up hard and never slip up or you will have to work your way back up to the top.
No breaks, unless you a smoker or vaper in which you can get a few mins to sit outside the back foot on the curb.
Don’t get too involved in the drama, just be there to make some money, however little it is.
A job at Applebees can only satisfy you if you do have a second or third job. Don’t expect to work here as a career bc you will be very poor
Pros
50% discount
Cons
No breaks, rude managers

Not a great place to work
Server (Former Employee) - Windsor, ON - 30 July 2018
The work environment is very toxic and hostile. There is a lot of favouritism within the workplace; Some people do not get in trouble for doing anything wrong (texting, being late, harassing others etc) but others will do one thing rarely and get in trouble every time. Management is nice but some are very unprofessional and should not be considered a manager. Just at one workplace there is multiple people whom should be fired for how they act towards other team members but will never get fired due to favouritism. I will never go back and I would NEVER recommend working here to anyone.
Pros
General manager is great
Cons
Everything else, especially co-workers

Part time Applebees server
Server (Former Employee) - Thunder Bay, ON - 24 April 2018
As a server your make server wage, unfortunately many people in thunder bay do not tip very well, so to make a good income you must work alot. The management doesnt seem to care about their employess and will find excuses to fire you when they no longer need you, especially if projecting sales are low.

coworkers turned family
Server (Former Employee) - Brandon, MB - 12 January 2018
typical serving job, loved who I worked with and being able to make people smile. I learned a lot about the restaurant industry working here and that it does take a lot of work.

fun environment, not so great food
Server (Former Employee) - Calgary, AB - 3 January 2018
I loved working her, but be careful of the food. Especially the chicken. Fun people to work with, nice managers, who are easy to get along with, so long as you do your job.

Fun place to work, just not that busy
Server (Current Employee) - Cambridge, ON - 23 January 2017
Applebee's is not what it used to be and has lost its business, and you get sent home more times than you actually start than actually working and making money.
Pros
Great people
Cons
not busy enough

Constructive and friendly workplace.
Server (Current Employee) - Niagara Falls, ON - 24 October 2015
Working for Applebee's is a great experience i enjoy the environment and the location is perfect. Theres always work to be done so your always busy and never bored. Applebee's staff is very friendly and helpful. Management is amazing and very productive, if you ever needed a day off they would work around your schedule. Applebee's feels more like home then a job. The hardest part about working for Applebee's would be the unsatisfied customers and being over staffed. The most enjoyable part of working for Applebee's would be the freedom to express myself, to laugh when i need to destress, to speak and actually be heard, and to preform not just because I'm paid to do it but because I'm inspired to be the best.
Pros
Lots of great specials weekly and daily, advancement opportunities, very spacious, friendly environment, staff meals
Cons
Cons: Seasonal, over staffed, limited outdoor seating, no benefits.
