Side hustleWorking for Appen is very contract-type work where you apply to projects and go through qualifications in order to participate. The projects go for an unknown amount of time.

Garbage companyThree "jobs" were advertised and when I clicked on them they weren't available. If you want to waste your time and make no money then this job is perfect for you.
Ad Evaluator in Remote

Fun work, very little payI worked for Appen as an ad evaluator. All I did was answer specific questions about different posts and ads on social media. It was actually really fun work, and I loved that I could work when I wanted instead of having to revolve my life around my work hours. On the flip side, they did not pay very much at all. It was also per hour, so if you were quick and efficient at your work (like I was), you actually got LESS pay. We rated the posts in groups called batches, so in this case, it would have been better if they paid a standard rate per batch instead of per hour. They also only paid once a month. And it was really hard to get the job in the first place. The assignment only lasted about 4 months, and once it was over, I could never get another gig. I did really well with the ad evaluation, so I thought that would give me a foot in the door for more gigs, but it didn't. I was never able to pick up another assignment. I know other people who have been applying with them for years, and have still never gotten an assignment. So there's no real opportunity for advancement or even ongoing work. Once you're done, you're done.Would've been a better side hustle if they paid more, had longer assignments, and/or offered more work once you've completed your initial assignment. I don't think they put any effort into retaining contractors because they know there are so many others out there who want to work at Appen.
