I think they made it seem so good, but really it wasn’t .
Insurance Agent (Former Employee) - Calgary, AB - 5 August 2019
They get you in the meetings, pumping you up and telling you how great the company is. Everybody working there is there for themselves and was not a friendly work environment
Pros
Get paid once a week
Cons
Take union dues from you every week, not a friendly place, poor leadership

Great place to work, but it is NOT easy. As with anything you get paid what you put in. Sometimes long hours, but you control your schedule.
You get paid what your worth by setting your own schedule and the amount of time you work. This expecting an easy ride might as well look elsewhere. If it was easy everyone would do it. Those that have a great work ethic and are willing to put the time in, will do very well. Those that don’t, well won’t. As with any job, you don’t work, you don’t have a job
Pros
Great management, paid is high, benefits are amazing, set your own schedule and targets
Cons
Major self discipline

Good work place with a positive work environment
Independent Agent - Life and Accident Insurance (Current Employee) - Calgary, AB - 15 August 2018
Good environment for a result oriented person. Good team working environment. Support from the head office to field staff needs some work. Work and family balance not very strongly emphasized in the company.
The hardest part of the job is learning the presentation script and then getting the appointment.
The most enjoyable part is concluding the sale and getting the advance payment.
The most frustrating thing is that once a policy is cancelled, the advance is immediately clawed back with no warning whatsoever.
Pros
commissions are paid nearly timely
Cons
very long hours not commensurate with the pay

Life Insurance Agent
Life Insurance Agent (Former Employee) - Calgary, AB - 17 July 2018
Not a job for everyone, you are promised a lot of things, go through insurance licensing at your own expense. Given pages and pages of sales script to memorize. Once all that is done, you are given about 20-40 leads for the month to work off of.
You can expect most of your leads to be recycled leads from people who have already had someone try to make a sales pitch to them, a bunch of numbers will be dead, and you will likely not be able to set up more then 1-2 appointments a week. Of the appointments you start with a 40% commission on ALP but you can expect virtually no pay until you have your sales script memorized verbatim, even then your pay is not guaranteed.
With a lot of time spent not getting paid you could eventually build a business off of this, gathering referrals to eventually create a clientele, however that could take years if at all and you can expect little to no pay and little to no referrals or sales off of the leads you are given, even if you become very very convincing at delivering their sales copy.
The real money working for this company is made by management, they earn income off recruiting people and get a % of the income from the people they hire. The majority of the people hired will turn over because it is very unlikely you can make a living off the sales for anything more then barely minimum wage if you work non-stop 80 hours a week. They hire people 4 days a week. It is possible however to make a living through AIL, a few people have done it within the company and have been very successful, but it is a very rare thing to see, it is usually -
Pros
Nice People at the meetings
Cons
Bad Pay unless you are extremely talented at sales, or get into mangement

Opportunity Unlimited! (at a cost)
Sales/Marketing (Current Employee) - Calgary, AB - 28 May 2018
Yes, the sky is the limit! But to most there is a cost to this and that is your TIME and DEDICATION.
Do not be fooled, this is not for a faint of heart and it is absolutely a test of your character and determination. If you have a fear of rejection or failure, then don't bother wasting your time!
Purely commission based sales and full of freedoms but would not recommend this to anyone currently living on a tight budget. This is essentially an opportunity to start your business and be your own boss which all sounds great but do not go into debt for the purpose of chasing a dream! At least not until you are financially stable otherwise you will crack under the pressure and have nothing to show for it.
Excellent peers and mentor-ship but they can only carry you so far.
This will take A LOT of time and personal financial investment to gain momentum to reach the top but if you can afford those things then go for it!
Pros
Leadership, mentors, flexibility in personal schedules
Cons
A timeline to success "affordabilty" that can be unrealistic to most people

not for me
Insurance Representative (Former Employee) - Calgary, AB - 24 April 2018
Not for everyone and should be able to keep another job until you can build up sales and know that you won't struggle financially to pay bills while working with this company.

Not for everyone
Agent (Former Employee) - Calgary, AB - 5 December 2017
Commission based, you will not earn if you are not able to sell a plan. The clients can be repetitive, while some cannot clearly afford a plan which makes it so hard to sell a plan.

The people who work here are great! I can honestly say there isn't one person who doesn't get along with another. Definitely need a strong work ethic to go far with this company - but if you possess that drive then you can make a lot of money here.

Horrible
Insurance Agent (Current Employee) - Calgary, AB - 26 June 2017
The company is great and oppoprtunity is amazing but the management structure i was apart of was terribly lead to build a career out of. if you have no other resposibilities outside of work or have the time to dedicate a year to building a company that will almost always keep you in a cycle of debt its great.

not for everyone
Direct Sales Representative (Former Employee) - Calgary, AB - 28 November 2016
excellent place to work if a direct sales job is for you, great group of people, extreme supportive, but a 100%commision based job is hard to break into, and any downturn in economy will further distress your earnings.

Simple but not easy
Management Trainee (Current Employee) - Calgary, AB - 13 May 2016
If you work really hard you will see the results but if put similar energy as any regular job into it you will fail.
A great position for singles and those who have lots of time and energy.
