Work Hard and Play Never

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Amazon demands a lot of its developers, but if you can stick with them, the pay is great, and the benefits are pretty above-average. If you've got the drive, the talent, and the spare time, go for it.

Pros

Income, Opportunity to Move Around

Cons

Long Hours, Lower Appreciation

Aggressive work culture, bad teams can destroy your career

Aggressive work culture, bad teams can destroy your career. internal politics and squabbling. Amazon is for people who like a backstabbing work culture. Its not a place for hard workers who want to accomplish things.

Horrible management, work like a mule

Chaotic management, no regard for work quality. Work life balance is non existent, company does not respect its employees. Go somewhere else if you want to be a decent human being.

Pros

Compensation on par with market

Cons

Company will work you until burn out

Job culture

Micro-management. Terrible work life balance. Frustrating promotion path.

The culture varies organization by organization. Generally it is expected to "work hard", maybe at least 50 hours a week (just work hard, even if what you do does not sound right to you). In my experience, I did not have any option to apply my ideas. Things were dictated to me by my manager in a very detailed manner. New ideas were ignored (not even criticized). Same with my career promotion process, in which I did not have any input.

Pros

Working with smart people

Cons

Long hours. Frustrating promotion path.

Place to learn a lot

Best place to learn a lot and do a lot of interesting things. But the problem would be the non technical managers deciding architecture of the systems.
