Great For Union, Bad for Salaried Employess
Stores Supervisor (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 31 March 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedGreat place to work if you are able to be in the union. Better benefits. Slightly more pay for being on the salary side but all the pressure is placed on you to perform, with very little job security Very poorly managed facility.

worst place to work
Technical Supervisor (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 18 September 2023
If you want to increase stress and die young, then join Altasteel. Spineless management, does not follow local and standards and will through you under the bus whenever needed.

Good Place to Work
Administrator (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 15 March 2023
Good place to work. Management is aloof. Your direct boss determines whether you have a great time or not. Very high staff turnover. No structure for career progression

Great place to work
Technical Support (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 10 January 2023
Fast paced work environment. Too many people in some area and others very few. Look for improvement opportunities and than try to implement that. Good luck.

Terrible place to work
Buyer (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 30 September 2022
Terrible culture overall. Management is quite poor without giving any direction to its employees. Continually new ownership. Employees are all quite disrespectful to eachother.

Has potential that is lost with poor management
Maintenance Millwright (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 1 September 2022
If you're just looking to keep your head down and take what you get as you get it then this is the place for you. It is union however there isn't a strong union culture.

Overall an awesome workplace
Millwright (Current Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 20 June 2022
Your crew almost becomes like a family to you. Most people are very friendly and you can have a conversation even if you don't know them. The management in the plantsite is usually really good. Front office management on the other hand is quite out of touch with the workers and almost lives in a dream world rather than the real one.

Administrator (Current Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 1 March 2022
Overall, I enjoy working here and I really enjoy my team. We are all very busy but, without hesitation we help each other out and work together to get things done.

Not a great place to work
Supervisor (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 10 January 2020
Management people always sacrifice bottom level people to protect their job . No mentorship and no direction.
Some bad supervisors .
Union people have good professionalism but company got sold so many times so now union is weak too.

A company in it's death throes?
General Labourer (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 23 August 2019
Cutting the staff in half and expecting the same amount of work to be done is not conducive to:
a) instilling confidence in the employees still standing.
b) promoting workplace satisfaction or creating a pleasant work atmosphere.
c) getting the work done in a timely, efficient, and/or accurate manner.
I am sure the company will likely be sold or go belly-up before the end of this year.
Pros
none
Cons
everything

Disorganized, unproductive, no management leadership
BUYER (Current Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 11 April 2019
Regular day 7.5 hours, work thru hour lunch, co-workers have no respect for others trying to do a good job. "Just do it" attitude from management. Management have double standards, play blame game. Projects are given with no regard for prior work load placed on employees. Hardest part of job is trying to do a good job, most enjoyable part - going home.
Pros
If you are union, apply here.
Cons
No work/life balance, can expect to be on call 24/7 but management not up front with this information.

For those who work hard
Lead Project Engineer, Electrical (Current Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 6 April 2019
Good pay and advancement if you are willing to work hard. Overtime is usually known ahead of time but not a 8-4 job and those who treat it like an 8-4 job are not well liked. Overtime is paid. Lots of early responsibility and personal control over work so easy to advance a career quickly.
Pros
Lots of responsibility and work
Cons
Lots of OT available

Stressful and racist environment
Steel Making Supervisor (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 3 January 2019
This company have very poor management style.
Their management people very racist and doing discrimination. I would not recomonded to work there.
Last few years they did not put any operational money to improve in equipment performances and sacrifice employees job to sustain upper management.

I like it here
Steelmaking Production Operator (Current Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 10 April 2018
Most workers dont realize how good they have it here. Strong union, good pay, good benefits..no education required. Dangerous yes, also very old equipment. But good maintenance and electrical team to keep things running. Shift work, long hours but lots of days off.
Pros
Good pay, benefits, all ppe provided, room for advancement
Cons
Long hours, switch from days to nights constantly
