Worst shop I’ve been in
Welder (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB17 January 2019
Shop safety isn’t taken serious, management expects ridiculousy high production but does not set you up to meet expectation and places all blame on you. Low pay rates. Only day shift receives OT. Most days you will spend 1:30 hours minimum searching for tools and rigging, nothing gets put back by employees. Very low communication between shop foreman’s which tends to lead to production slow down. For being such a large shop you would expect to have a lot better equipment to work with. The list goes on and on a lot more cons than pro’s. Everything is done as cheaply as possible.

Dangle that carrot
Pipefitter (Former Employee) –  Fox Creek, AB26 December 2018
Dangle that carrot, low pay less than promised hours. Layoffs at the drop of a hat a poor morale. Everyone at the company that had any time under their belt acted like a beat dog .

Aweful
Welder (Current Employee) –  Calgary, AB23 October 2018
The feeling I get working here every day is the same feeling I got when I was a child and I realized that there actually wasn't any candy in that white van.

But seriously if you're unemployed, it's a paycheck. Other than that there's a reason they're always hiring.
Pros
Better than unemployment

Worst company I've ever worked for in the patch.
Welder (Former Employee) –  Hinton, AB9 July 2018
Their schedule is just a joke. Expect to get lay off without notice. Expect to see arrogant management and next to none respect for employees. Try to voice your thoughts and they'll find a way to send you home. Money's not great either. Bunch of liars.
Pros
18 hrs a day, haha
Cons
There's still people believing and trusting them

Time to work
1st year apprentice steamfitter/pipefitter (Former Employee) –  Hinton, AB2 March 2018
Good place for an out of town oilfield construction company. Lots of hours means lots of money. 24 days on and 4 days off makes it hard to be a family man. But you'll have a comfortable family waiting for you to come home to.
Pros
Good wages and benefits
Cons
Long work schedules

Jr. IT Helpdesk Support (Former Employee) –  Hinton, AB23 February 2018
I worked under a great IT Manager who gave me the perfect balance of guidance and privacy to figure out all of the work related issues that the IT Sectors were needed for. Coworkers were genuinely friendly, and I still keep in touch with them.

Lower level guys are good to work with.
Field. Weld. Hydro. Paint. Blast. Operate. (Current Employee) –  Hinton Shop10 January 2018
Wrong people in the wrong positions as in supervisor and middle management. Schedule is a joke and the supervisors laugh about it. Hours are all over the chart. Some days 20hr shifts. Illegal by the way. Zero home life. Hired for one job but do all trades. Safety is a joke and when something is brought to their attention nothing is done about it. This list is endless. Go work for them and in a week you'll see. Nevermind in the first day you'll see.

Trainer (Current Employee) –  Hinton, Ab.18 September 2017
Company has high turnover in non-skilled workers. Past incumbent left very little assistance in this position. Not sure of longevity that could be expected.

Pipefitter (Former Employee) –  Fox Creek, AB8 February 2017
It was ok but not enough hours. I didn't have a family than it didn't matter.
It was a work placement.
I wasn't there long enough to form a fair opinion.
Supervisor at the time was good.

Productive, knowledgable, enjoyable group of workers
Lead Hand (Former Employee) –  various locations in alberta7 September 2016
Alstar is good group of guys to work with. The supervisors are knowledgable about the tasks at hand, and easy to talk to and ask questions. They keep a relatively steady stream of work, and would work with employees for scheduling needed time off. The best part about working for Alstar was everyone gathering after work for activities, developing good working relationships throughout the crew.

its an oilfield job
3rd Year Apprentice Steamfitter-Pipefitter (Former Employee) –  Hinton, AB14 July 2016
its an oilfield job, 24 days on 7 days off. you get overworked and underpaid so it works out to the same amount as working a 9 day on 5 day off at regular pay. A little "clicky" but it is a good place to work, especially since they umped up their safety.
