Good salary/benefits, however....

I worked for AHS for 10 years in the Mental Health department. Great pay and benefits. If you luck out with a good Sup and Manager then life will be great and you can enjoy your work, helping those in need. If you get the typical burnt out Counsellor/Therapist unable to support clients any more that gets into a supervisory position where they check boxes and tell front line what to do, be warned. Toxic management from the top down. Underqualified management and supervisors- promoted by taking internal courses and nepotism. Area Managers overseeing large parts of Alberta with little/incorrect understanding of Best Practices. Very toxic 3rd party whining: you are expected to say that you'd go directly to a co-worker if there's a conflict, but most don't. So management sits down and compiles anything they have on you and throw it all at you, rather than speaking to you immediately about any possibility of directing or training you to improve. Supervision is almost non-existent other than self-reporting and hours of meetings and meetings about meetings, when you should be actually providing service to clients. Little regard for clients from management: numbers count though. Lots of unbelievably lazy co-workers doing the minimum. If you are a go-getter and enjoy serving people in need, prepare to see some terrible "therapy" and "support" from sheepskin-waving cohorts with no actual empathy, ability or enthusiasm to do the job. I watched many excellent employees who had spent 25+ years serving the public here and working hard get bullied out of their jobs; heartbroken. -

Pros

Salary and benefits. The honour to serve the public.

Cons

Roll of the dice whether you get decent management. Lots of C.Y.A**

Public Sector

Great job security. Compensation is mediocre to low. Leadership unable or unwilling to provide leadership. Lots of unnecessary process and bureaucracy. Pretty typical for public sector work place. You don't come here for the excitement of things, or the pay or the perks, you come here to have a secure job, and for the retirement package. Keep your head down for 25-30 years and retire with a modest pension.

Okay place to work if all you want is a paycheque

Okay place to work, if you even halfway do your job you will seldom see your manager. Probably one of the most disorganized and management heavy places I have ever worked. They seem to always be able to find money to create new management positions , or to give themselves raises. For instance on their statement of remuneration you will see a vice president who made $273,215.90 in salary and $39,434.77 worth of benefits in 2015 go to making $454,876.83 In salary and $64,274.22 worth of benefits in 2016 and, as of 2018 his job title still hasn't changed. Tell me how these outrageous raises are justified and yet the budget for maintenance keeps shrinking even though the buildings keep getting older. The directors are more concerned with making their paperwork look good on graphs and charts then they are about actually putting systems in place to help you get maintenance done at the facility. The benefits although everyone thinks that they are good actually suck. Among other things the dental rate chart must be from back in the 90s as the rates that they cover 80% of, are nowhere close to what the dentist actually charges. The portion covered for things like orthotic inserts for your boots, chiropractic, massage and Eyeglasses are also not anywhere near what you will spend on these items. The problem is that the benefits probably won't get much better because there are too many low paying jobs at AHS where the employees would rather see $0.25 an hour on their cheque rather than better benefits. They do have sick time which is a nice benefit to have when you need it. -

Pros

Stable job

Cons

Very top heavy, benefits need improved, union that doesnt care

Secure place to work

I have worked here for 22 years and love my job. I only wish I had full time hours. I would recommend working for AHS as this is a secure job with great benefits and compensation.

Lots of potential for growth

The organization is going through a lot of changes which causes a very dynamic work environment. If you are capable of quickly adapting to situations then there are a lot of opportunities within the organization.

Pros

Good benefits, Good work environment.

Cons

Dealing with government red tape.

Salaries are good and have Union representation

Worked here for 11 years and within that time went to each wage step and when reached the last, I have yet to have an increase in wage for several years.

Hard to get a full time permanent job

Sadly jobs are scarce. You must start casual and beg for work. The benefits could be better as well but at least there are some, if you have a line. Mental health will get you a job

Nice if you can get in

Working in the admin end of the business, it can be very hard to get a permanent position. There are lots of temp offerings, but their budget is always dependent on the government of the day. There is little room for advancement and not much culture. Everyone just keeps their head down and punches in & out. Not much teamwork or collaboration. I don't get a feeling of strong leadership from the middle echelons. The good part is, if you get a permanent union position you are locked in until retirement, the pay and the benefits are good.

Great place to work and great support from management.

You will experience a just culture which helps in improving patient/client care. Case load can be improved if more staff is added to current staffing levels.

Pros

Great health benefits.

Cons

A big case load.

When new students are employed their probation period should be six months

Students enter positions for practicum and sometimes get hired right after their course, most don’t get hired right away. Those that don’t get hired get caught in the unfortunate position of “if you don’t use it you lose it “, or maybe do get hired but aren’t given proper training based on their learning level.

Pros

Great wages, benefits, flexible schedule, able to pick up shifts

Cons

Click groups of staff
