Nurse (Current Employee) –  Edmonton, AB30 October 2018
Too fixated on media propaganda rather then actually fixing solutions, heavy management vs increasing front line staff, dictatorship type of organization rather then ensuring the best care for Albertans by asking the community members and staff where resource allocation should occur.

A workplace that strives to contribute to the health needs of Albertans
Clinical Nurse Specialist (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB28 October 2018
-Experienced personal and professional growth.
-Need for focused ethical and performance management education for management.
-Was not a psychological safe environment. Inability to deal with destructive conflict effectively and efficiently.
-The opportunity to be a change agent at the front-lines and systems level was the most fulfilling part of the job. Advocating for a health workplace was also enjoyable although difficult.

Distressing place to work, Work place violence and harresment still exists
Tradesman (Current Employee) –  Calgary, AB26 October 2018
Work its self is ok, you do your own thing. Co workers are great. Management regularly practices harassment and bullying. Don't get credited for doing over and above your own duties. Upper management is ok with work place violence.
Pros
pay check
Cons
mental and emotional distress for yourself and your family

Executive Assistant (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB25 October 2018
Life balance is good and because of budget restraints restricted growth regarding training, no coffee, tea provided, no other perks like events. The overall culture is better than 5 years ago. Senior Management is really trying but middle Management is terrible.
Pros
Life work balance and pension
Cons
Not much room for growth and/or recognition

Very rewarding role in being able to help those in need with ensuring their buildings are upgraded
Project Manager (Former Employee) –  central Alberta2 October 2018
AHS is a challenging place to work because it is a gov't role where the transparency requirement gets in the way of progress and common sense. The role consists of managing stakeholders, consultants and vendors to get projects done. The most enjoyable part of the job is going to site and seeing the progress of projects and feeling good about the contribution being made to the betterment of the end-users.
Pros
working to help those in need, good vacation plan, pension
Cons
government red tape, clique & kingdom entrenched management structure, nepotism, old boys club..

Most of the management have favorites and cater to them. It can be a tough environment to work in and difficult to plan when you never know when you are working.

AHS - a good company to work for
Team Lead (Current Employee) –  Calgary, AB4 September 2018
I love my manager and my other colleagues, however, I hate the fact that it is soooo hard to get rid of bad employee's here. Bad employee's can take other temp positions within AHS, thus prolonging the termination process. This is very unfair to other managers.
However, I do enjoy working for AHS and it does offer great benefits.

Nancy Colp Summary
Secretary I to present (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB29 August 2018
I work for a 5 Doctors, scheduling client appointments, filing, faxing, answering the phones, problem solving, updating CVs, booking conference flights hotels etc., dictations, organizing retreats, keeping the department website updated and the doctor's personal websites updated.

I enjoy my job seeing ill patients recover. I never stop learning, our management is always very supportive when it comes to a desire to learn new skills. I work well on my own, but there is a great support network in our department of colleagues who work as a team.

Highly disorganized company
Support services (Former Employee) –  Edmonton, AB24 August 2018
The front line workers are the really gold here. Almost every single manager I worked for was power hungry and a micro manager and did not have good supervisor skills. There are too, too, too, many layers of "management" and it takes forever just to get a light bulb changed. So trying to improve a work process is almost impossible due to the levels of frustration you have to go through. Very exasperating.

The pay is good in some areas; however, advancement is not possible unless you know someone. There are a lot of lazy workers and old people who don't want to learn the new systems that are coming on line; however, they refuse to retire. No incentives to do better.

Advice is to do your work, keep your head down and stay off the radar. AHS cuts jobs and doesn't care about it's front line workers; meanwhile layers and layers of "managment" take home huge salaries for doing very little untrained work.
Pros
Pension
Cons
poor work culture, poor appreciation of front line workers
