In general, a well organized workplace with numerous opportunities in a variety of nursing fields, lots of lateral mobility to try different areas of nursing and plenty of flexibility for casual, part time, temporary, or full time work. A generally collaborative and team-based environment.
Poor management, hypocrisy and bullying. No chances of advancement even if you more qualified, unless you’re “in good standing” with the manager who is not qualified herself. LPNs are preferred because of lower pay rate, although not competent. If you know the manager, you’ll have perks; if you’ll seek clarification and stand up for yourself, the manager will find a way to make you leave.
Toxic work environment due to poor management and bullies (including managers), especially Beaverlodge hospital. If you don’t fit in their clique, you will be merciless bullied. Cronyism, and interrelationships among staff builds the most toxic and egregious atmosphere to work in; preferential treatment for members of the “clique”. Lack of professionalism.
As a nurse, I can't imagine starting my career anywhere other than the Alberta Children's Hospital. The staff are amazing, the facility is incredible and caring for kids has been such a blessing.
Upper management treats you like a number, not a person. If there are issues with your pay you have to fight to get it resolved. It took me a month and a half! Payroll acted as if it were no big deal. $1800.00 is a big deal to me! Staff are overworked, looked down upon and worked to exhaustion, but then put on attendance management if the work life makes you I'll. If I could find something else, I'd be gone in a heartbeat!
Great staff, good wages
No full time positions, poor upper management
The job itself is quite good. But don't ever speak up and advocate for better care. Definitely don't criticize management. While not prohibited to do so, Management and HR will find other things and minor deficiencies to discipline you with as a way to punish people who rock the boat. Very political. Incompetent HR Advisors in the Calgary Zone. Managers are supported under any and all situations. They will actively reduce you to nothing for advocating for fairness or better patient care. .

AHS is well-funded and well-organized. Having worked as a nurse in Ontario as well, I’d say AHS compares very well in terms of compensation, organization of staff, training, and employee supports. Although it will obviously vary from place to place, I found the culture of health care delivery to be very positive with excellent collaboration between staff, clear policies, and good access to physical resources and services resulting in excellent patient care.
Reasonable pay with good job security. Loved the job, strongly disliked management. They insist on putting all concerns back on the reporter, deny any issues, and demand a put up or be silent attitude from employees. Constantly told to cut costs.
Regular opportunity for continuing education at reduced or no cost, team atmosphere
Poor work life balance, poor management
Terrible work environment in Rocky Mountain House Unhealthy place to work if you have a brain stay away! No management....LPNS run the show in Community Health and are hardly qualified to manage a health care team with multiple errors being made but if you are an individual who cares about patients you will have to make incident reports which will in turn ostracism will cause you to quit
I mostly work the home care ambulatory clinic, where we provide medications treatment such as antibiotics, hydration, anticoagulants, etc and wound management to the clients. Home care gives me the opportunity to see and treat clients with various diagnosis starting from post-op hospital discharge to seniors. Both community part and ambulatory part of home care require me to perform acute client comprehensive assessment on each and every client. Home care sustains a healthy and friendly environment among the colleagues.
