When a recruiter asks why they should hire you, they want to know the reasons you think you are the best fit for the open position. Employers hire people to solve various problems, which range from building a brand to streamlining processes to boosting sales. When you make a pitch for a job, you aim to prove to the employer that you are the best person to solve the problem.

When answering this question, try to convince the interviewer that:

  • You have a perfect combination of experience and skills that make you an outstanding candidate.

  • You will fit in well and make a great addition to the company.

1. Study the job posting

To understand the specific skills, qualities and experience employers are looking for in an ideal candidate, review the job posting. Pay special attention to the job description and key sections like “Requirements,” “Experience” and “Education.” Find commonalities between what the employer is looking for and the skills, experiences and qualities you have to offer. Explain how you could use certain skills to help the business.

2. Research the company

Spending time studying the company's mission, goals and recent announcements can help you to answer this question. You should use this information to explain how you are connected to their values and how you might help them accomplish key business goals. For example, if a company's mission is to deliver excellent customer service, make sure your answer describes how you could help their clients or increase customer satisfaction.

3. Tie your background to the job posting

Explain how your experience, skills and attributes make you the best fit for the job as it pertains to the company and position for which you're applying. You should address each of the requirements listed in the job posting, as well as any additional qualities that make you a great fit.

4. Quantify your accomplishments

When possible, support your accomplishments with numerical results. Adding numbers to your achievements gives hiring managers a better idea of how hard you worked to succeed. For example, if you're applying for a job as an accountant at a company that is looking for someone to streamline processes, you might explain that at your previous company, you implemented a new process for expense accounts that reduced time-to-reimbursement by 25%.

Tips for answering "Why should we hire you?"

Consider these tips when you're formulating your answer:

  • Be brief and direct. Try to keep your answers straightforward to keep the hiring manager's interest. You should have a sincere answer that sums up why they should hire you since the rest of your interview answers should detail your specific skills and experience.

  • Focus on what you can do for the company. Make sure your answer explains what you can bring to the company. Your successes should relate to the company and how you can help it excel. Just as you want to know that the role is a good fit for you, the hiring manager wants to know you're a good fit for the company.

  • Give a genuine response. To ensure you provide a genuine answer, prepare a few talking points, but don't memorize your entire response. You will sound more natural when you have an outline to build from.

  • Elaborate on your resume. By the time you interview, the hiring manager has probably already read your resume, and they will probably have a paper copy with them. Instead of repeating the same information they can find on your resume, detail your bullet points and how they make you a good fit. Giving more detail helps the hiring manager learn more about what you can do for the business.
