Full job description

We are a busy private executive family looking for a bit of a “jack of all trades”: part personal assistant, part mentor and activity-driver for our tween and teen, part household logistics manager. Overall, this is a support role for a busy family to help our lives function more efficiently and effectively. It would suit a classroom teacher looking to leave the classroom, an experienced personal assistant who enjoys working with older kids, or someone of a similar profile.

Our two children are 10 and 14 and are quite independent; the mentorship aspect is about being a role model and providing academic and logistical support and positive companionship to the children. Ideally you will have a degree or diploma (in any subject) and be capable of providing some academic support and structure to the children, particularly the 10-year-old who is in a hybrid classroom/homeschool program.

You will also be providing logistical support for the running of the household, which includes one parent who works out of town approximately half the time, and occasionally traveling with the family.

A happy, positive attitude, high energy, exceptional organizational skills and creativity are essential for this role, as is the utmost discretion. Reliability and consistency are crucial. Experience and expertise in working with high-functioning neurodivergent children and adults is very much preferred.

This role does NOT include cleaning or housekeeping, other than light tidying with the children or cleaning up from cooking or projects.

This role DOES include frequent evening and occasional weekend work, along with stretches of 24/7 work while traveling with the family or staying with the children while the parents travel. 24/7 work will be compensated over and above the base salary.

SAMPLE TASKS may include:

  • Come up with fun and enriching activities for the kids to do, either at home or outside of the house, and manage these activities
  • Manage the children’s homework and school schedules and provide homework and project help
  • Drive the children to after-school activities and play dates
  • Help to keep track of the family schedule, kids’ activities, school deadlines, etc
  • Help to organize and schedule the maintenance and care of the home (with our outside professionals) and anticipate these needs
  • Ensure that routines are established and held
  • Help to create weekly meal plans, shop for and help to cook dinners with the children (the 14 year old is a talented cook and loves trying new recipes)
  • Engage with the kids about their interests and passions and help them find ways to pursue these interests
  • Assist the kids in the development of life skills such as cooking and life management/organization
  • Keep the house stocked with essentials (ie laundry soap, paper towel, printer paper); monitor stocks and organize replenishment when low
  • Where needed, travel with the kids and/or with the family both within and outside of Canada

As the kids are in school during the day, you will have many daytimes off during school hours, and will be expected to work until kid bedtime 3-4 days per week on alternating weeks.

Other things we are looking for in a candidate include:

  • Willingness and ability to travel with the family to the family’s vacation properties within and outside of Canada, including the legal ability to leave and enter Canada. All travel costs will be paid.
  • If live-out, willingness to stay with the children for spans of 1-14 days while the parents travel for business. Overnights are paid in addition to the base salary.
  • A current BC driver’s license with good safety record. A vehicle will be provided and all costs paid.
  • Experience, expertise and passion for working with neurodiverse children and families. If you are qualified, you will know what this means.
  • LGBTQIA2S-friendly and free of bigotry based on race, gender, orientation, religion or other categories. (This is an absolute non-negotiable.)
  • Ability to ski or snowboard (nice to have but not required), drive a boat (nice to have but not required), and swim/supervise kids in the water (absolutely required).
  • Discretion and confidentiality. You will be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement.
  • Must love cats. We are cat people.

WHAT WE OFFER

Since we are looking for an exceptional caregiver, we are willing to offer an exceptional compensation package. This includes:

  • Highly competitive, above-market salary with total compensation in the six figures, including holiday bonus and annual raises
  • A fair bit of flexibility with your time, given sufficient notice
  • For live-in candidates, we offer accommodation at no cost, in a private self-contained luxury one-bedroom apartment with in-suite laundry. Note that we cannot accommodate others, such as partners or children, in this accommodation; it is single-occupancy.
  • Excellent extended health, dental and vision benefits to begin after 30 days, with premiums paid by the family
  • The use of a company car during working hours and, for live-in candidates, on your own time as well
  • Generous annual paid vacation, including a minimum of 4 weeks’ vacation at the family’s discretion when we travel, and an additional 2 weeks of your own preference, with family approval
  • Although we strongly prefer candidates already in Vancouver, we are willing to consider a relocation package for truly exceptional candidates currently residing elsewhere in Canada. We are NOT able to sponsor from overseas, and you must be currently IN Canada and currently eligible to work in Canada.
