Full job description

Westpower is the leading North American rotating equipment solutions provider with services spanning industrial and engineered pumps, fabricated engineered fluid systems, reliability and lubrication products, field service and repair solutions that enhance performance.

The Machinist’s primary focus is to set up and operate several machines: including lathes and cylindrical grinders and other metal working equipment to machine work pieces according to engineered drawings and route sheets. Machinists are required to have sufficient experience or familiarity with the equipment used.

Education, Skills, and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent GED
  • Must have or be working towards Machinist Trade Certification
  • Requires experience with lathes, Mills and Vertical Turret Lathes.
  • Must be familiar and able to work with very tight tolerances.
  • Must be able to read and understand written planning and follow verbal instructions.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and meet all specified deadlines.
  • Reading and interpreting of blueprints
  • Experience with Pumps and Pump systems an asset.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties of the position with safety as the priority and in accordance with Westpower’s HSE Manual.
  • Ensure that safety and other issues and suggestions are brought to the attention of the Manager.
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers.
  • Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, grinders, etc.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate all the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, workpieces, and materials onto machines.
  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
  • Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information in order to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
  • Optimize the cutting of raw material by properly laying out and measuring prior to cutting. Ensure cut material is marked and coded correctly.
  • Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine the need for adjustments or repairs.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks on equipment (i.e., adjustments, cooling replacement, oil, etc.)
  • Check workpieces to ensure that they are properly lubricated and cooled.
  • When finished using, ensure Westpower tooling and equipment is returned to designated area(s).
  • Notify Manager of damaged or defective tooling or if there are additional tooling requirements.
  • Complete paperwork as required by Westpower policies and processes.
  • Follow the quality processes and guidelines as set by Westpower.
  • Provide technical feedback on drawings, processes, and instructions to continuously improve Westpower’s documentation.
  • Responsible for cleaning machine(s) at the end of a shift, at the end of a process, when safety deems it necessary and/or when finished with a shared piece of equipment.
  • Maintain a tidy work area free of hazards, including shared work areas.
  • Any other job related, and support activity duties as required.
