Disability Management & Wellness Specialist

The City of Richmond dedicated to fostering a healthy and inclusive workplace environment. Committed to supporting our employees' well-being, we are seeking a passionate and experienced Disability Management & Wellness Specialist to join our team.

As our Disability Management & Wellness Specialist, you will serve as the subject matter expert, providing leadership in the development, coordination, and ongoing advising of disability management and employee wellness in the City. Your role will report to and collaborate with the Manager, Health, Safety & Wellness to ensure alignment with corporate initiatives while adhering to relevant disability management legislation.

  • Provide advice and case management for occupational and non-occupational absences, emphasizing stay-at-work/early return-to-work programs.
  • Manage lifecycle of WorkSafeBC Claims files including participating in Request for Reviews and Appeals through WCAT
  • Provide leadership for duty-to-accommodate initiatives, ensuring compliance with legislative standards and consulting with legal resources as necessary.
  • Manage absences exceeding the threshold, maintain communication with employees, and coordinate return-to-work plans.
  • Collaborate with HR managers to develop relevant procedures, reports, and agreements related to sick leave and disability benefits.
  • Develop and implement the corporate mental health strategy and deliver training programs related to disability management, employee health, wellness, and coaching.
  • Conduct research, studies, and surveys to assess organizational needs and prepare reports with recommendations.
  • Provide leadership for referral and monitoring of staff requiring residential treatment for substance use disorders.
  • Mentor and advise other managers on complex disability management claims, including those in Public Works and Fire departments.
  • Design, deliver, manage and measure the effectiveness & engagement of corporate programs, including policy development, mentoring, and consultative services for stakeholders both internally and externally.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Occupational Health and Safety, Occupational Therapy, Human Resources or Kinesiology with a minimum of 5 years of experience; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience as a disability management specialist within a unionized environment, handling cases of both physical and psychological nature.
  • Solid understanding of collective agreements, workplace legislation, disability guidelines, and Human Rights legislation.
  • Advanced interpersonal, communication, mediation, and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency in organizational and decision-making skills.
  • Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of medical and treatment terminology related to disability
