The Mental Health Support Worker will deliver holistic services to address the needs of Spirit Bay Elementary School students and their families. This role focuses on promoting mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being through a culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, gender-based, and family-centered approach.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Main Responsibilities
- Offer culturally and age sensitive mental health supports, respecting the traditions and values of Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek (BZA).
- Provide one-on-one mental health guidance and support to students experiencing mental health crises or concerns.
- Complete assessments to determine risks and strengths for children.
- Promote mental health awareness, prevention strategies, and life skills to students.
- Develop and deliver mental health related programs.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of crisis management and the impact of recent or historical trauma on mental health.
- Develop wellness plans in consultation with other service providers and parents.
- Monitor the effectiveness of plans and adjust where necessary.
- Provide students with tools, resources, and supports to navigate mental health situations.
- Engage with external and community staff to participate in the planning of community events that support the overall well-being of students and their families.
- Utilize crisis management techniques to support acute crises.
- Provide students and families with mental health resources and supports.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records and notes.
- Prepare reports related to demographics, health status, and program statistics and information.
- Support the development of funding proposals for mental health and wellness related programs and activities and support required reporting.
- Strong understanding of major behavioural, emotional, and mental health problems and disorders experienced by Indigenous students and their families.
- Ability to provide evidence-based counselling support services.
- Demonstrate levels of patience and empathy to all students.
- Strong understanding of principles and practices related to providing trauma-informed care.
- Good time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and pay attention to detail.
- Ability to relate to youth of multiple ages and support their growth and development.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to uphold confidentiality requirements related to student information.
- Ability and comfortability to drive and travel in various weather conditions.
- Ability to speak Ojibway is an asset.
- At least two (2) years of work experience providing mental health supports to youth is required.
- Demonstrated experience providing mental health support to elementary aged students is an asset.
- Experience working in a First Nation environment is an asset.
- Bachelor of Social Work, Psychology or related human service is required.
- Certification in First Aid is required.

- Understand and follow all human resources policies through respectful behaviours and actions aligned with the culture and values of Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek (BZA).
- Awareness of recent, historical, and intergenerational trauma that Indigenous children and their families may have experienced. Including the psychological, neurological, physiological, social, and spiritual impact of trauma.
- Uphold the reputation of Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek (BZA) through individual actions and behaviours.
- Follow workplace expectations including attendance and assigned work activities.
- Ability to successfully and periodically undergo an appropriate criminal and vulnerable sector check is required.
