JOB SUMMARY

Chipewyan Prairie First Nation, Alberta is seeking an experienced and competent Director of Finance to join our Administration Team. The position will be responsible for the finances of the First Nation. The ideal candidate should have senior management experience working in First Nations, as well as outstanding organization, communication, and leadership skills. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement financial strategies, plans, and policies to support the organization's goals and objectives.
  • Oversee the financial operations of the company, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Manage the accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and account reconciliation.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the finance team, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous Services Canada, Federal & Provincial Contribution Agreements, and the First Nation Development Fund Program
  • Perform all accounting procedures with respect to the General Accepted Accounting Procedures.
  • Preparation of monthly financial statements for management reviews and perform financial audits.
  • Ensure monthly financial statements are complete and released in a timely manner.
  • Meeting with managers regularly to develop and review monthly statements to ensure financial reporting is timely and relevant to their operation and/or funding agreement and management work plans.
  • Preparing required financial reports for all stakeholders and regulatory agencies like ISC, CCRA, CMHC, FNDF, etc.
  • Experience in Sage financial reporting systems.
  • Collaborate with other departments to support business development initiatives and ensure financial feasibility.
  • Work closely with the Administrative Director to coordinate and prioritize strategic planning and financial issues.
  • Establish a financial system while considering reporting requirements.
  • Travel as required.
  • May be required to taken on additional duties from time to time.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following areas: Accounting, Finance or Business Administration from a recognized university or college.
  • Proven experience in a leadership role in finance or accounting.
  • Proficient in financial software systems and Microsoft Excel.
  • Able to supply a clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector.
  • Ability to communicate in the Dene language is an asset.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize tasks and responsibilities.
  • Experience meeting deadlines under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently and with others in a team environment.
  • Must have strong numerical, verbal, and written skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with respect to business matters.
  • Valid class 5 Driver’s License & Clean Driver’s Abstract Required
  • Successful candidate will be required near Chipewyan Prairie First Nation, Alberta (located 127 km south of Fort Mc Murray).

EXPERIENCE:

  • 5+ year of experience working with First Nations and understand the federal programs and reporting requirements.
  • CMA, CGA or CA designation would be an asset, but years of experience in the field would be considered.
  • Knowledge of other employee benefits packages like WCB, Health, Dental, Life Insurance and pension plans would be an asset.
  • Experience working in a First Nations community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values.
