Paver Operator:

The Paver Operator is responsible for operating paving machines that lay asphalt and concrete for roads, parking lots, and other surfaces. This role requires precision and an understanding of paving techniques to ensure a smooth and even surface.

Screed Operator:

The Screed Operator controls the screed, a part of the paver that levels and smooths the asphalt as it is laid. This role ensures the asphalt surface is level and meets the required specifications.

Roller Operator:

The Roller Operator operates rollers used to compact and smooth freshly laid asphalt and other materials. This role ensures the surface is properly compacted and meets project specifications.

Skid Steer Operator:

The Skid Steer Operator operates skid steer loaders to assist with various tasks on the paving job site, including material handling, grading, and site preparation.

General Responsibilities:

Paver Operator:

  • Operate a paver and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.
  • Preheat a paving screed before placement of asphalt, monitor and control temperature settings of the asphalt mixture.
  • Line pavers appropriately to the work area, and ensure proper application of the asphalt, smoothing it evenly to the desired height, width, and depth.
  • Attach extensions to screed, to adjust width.
  • Regulate temperature of asphalt flowing from hopper.

Screed Operator:

  • Observe and control the distribution of asphalt mix to ensure uniformity to obtain specified compacted mat thickness and cross section, while achieving proper surface drainage with minimal segregation.
  • Ensure proper depth application of the asphalt on the screed, using manual and automatic grade controls.
  • Must set up, employ and disassemble automatic grade controls.
  • Adjust where and how thick asphalt is placed, measuring the width and thickness of asphalt, and determining the application rate.

Roller Operator:

  • Safely operate roller in successive overlapping passes over surfaces to be compacted, rolling subgrade and asphalt to desired compaction and smoothness.
  • Determine speed and direction of machine, based on knowledge of compressibility of material under changing temperatures, so that ridges do not form by excessive pressure.
  • Push hand roller and pound surfaces using hand tamp or guide portable power roller over areas not accessible to road roller.
  • Operate a Breakdown roller to massage hot mix asphalt into place.
  • Operate a Smooth Drum Roller, to seal subgrade and base surfaces.

Skid Steer Operator:

  • Operate a skid steer and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment.

Working Environment/Conditions:

  • Out-of-town travel is required.
  • Overtime as required.
  • Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity.
  • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 20 LBS on a regular basis.
  • Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required.
  • Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear is recommended.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • High school or equivalent; with experience in related construction activities.
  • Class 5 license; clean abstract.
  • 2 to 3 years of experience operating Breakdown Rollers, Rubber Tire Rollers and/or Finish Rollers is required.
  • Demonstrate a proficient understanding of asphalt and raking techniques.
  • Knowledge of paving construction methods, asphalt and road construction materials, heavy equipment operation and industry requirements.
  • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
