NOC: 10019(Other Business Services Managers)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review occupational health and safety legislation, amendments and best practices to optimize occupational health and safety programs
  • Ensure sub-contractors on the project act in accordance with STRABAG health and safety policies, procedures and protocols and demonstrate this by providing all necessary documentation as per contractual obligations
  • Strong background in reviewing developing safe work plans for client
  • Ensure all client contractual obligations are being fulfilled
  • Interact and cooperate with government enforcement agencies and provide necessary documentation as required
  • Liaise and interact with government agencies, public and private sector organizations, departments and stakeholders to exchange information and acquire knowledge.
  • Analyse and provide statistical reports where required/requested
  • Guide, direct and empower assigned health and safety personnel
  • Effectively manage return to work processes for injured workers, working closely with the employee and his/her supervisor for RTW and WSIB matters.
  • Ensure thorough, timely and effective investigation and reporting of incidents and work refusals
  • Ensure effectiveness and content of site-specific orientations and training as it relates to the scope of work and associated hazards on the project
  • Oversee the coordination of tunnel rescue
  • Investigate and report all non-conformance issues to the appropriate workplace parties
  • Participate in both internal and external daily tool box talks
  • Participate in an annual health and safety program audit to ensure the effectiveness of the Corporate Health & Safety Management System
  • Provide guidance to the workforce and ensure completion of job hazard analyses for all work on the project, using the hierarchy of hazard controls to address all hazards and risks for the applicable processes.
  • Coordinate and ensure the effectiveness of health and safety inspections on the project.
  • Ensure the procurement of health and safety items for the project are purchased in a timely and cost-effective manner and used/maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations
  • Provide guidance, advice, counselling as required to resolve escalated concerns through effective investigation, mediation and conflict resolution.
  • Develop, communicate and promote internal and external occupational health, wellness and safety initiatives
  • Act as a resource or serve as a member on the Joint Health and Safety Committee, assisting and providing information and responses on behalf of the company
  • Ensure the documentation and retention of all health and safety-related records for the project as per prescribed time frames
  • Perform other related duties as required
  • Manage a team of about 1-2 employees

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Holds or eligible to apply for Occupational Health and Safety Certificate, as per the Occupational Health & Safety Act/Regulations Extensive knowledge of applicable federal, provincial and municipal regulations / legislation / standards and best practices
  • Health and Safety experience in Heavy Civil Construction
  • Previous experience in tunnelling an asset
  • Proven ability to effectively organize, delegate and manage the health and safety department including resolution of conflict in a positive and constructive manner
  • Willing to actively participate in continuous professional development throughout the course of employment
  • Proven ability to maintain the confidentiality of information and records
  • Service and team-oriented leader with attention to detail
  • Proven ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Tact, diplomacy, flexibility, listening and persuasion skills a must
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with database applications and administration systems, specifically Microsoft Office
  • Having a valid Driver's license with a driver's abstract check

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary school diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field of study
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience managing Occupational Health and Safety, with at least 1 year of experience in tunnelling and heavy civil construction environments.
  • CRSP and/or NCSO designations an asset

Work Environment

  • Employee is generally required to work on the construction site, business and work location is 3594 Eglinton Avenue West, Toronto, Ontario M6M 1V8
  • This is a full time job with a minimum of 40 hours per week
  • Written English and spoken English required
