The purpose of this function is to vet models being used within the business groups, to facilitate the management of model risk within SLF, and mitigating the risk of financial loses due to potential model errors.
In addition to model vetting, this group will develop advanced analytics to support other EC groups doing production work.
The AVP, Model Risk vetting & Analytics is managing the Model Vetting Services (MV) team. This team is responsible for the mitigation of the risk associated with model usage across SLF. It acts in an oversight role to ensure that risks associated with model usage have been outlined and mitigated; and that the model itself is properly designed and is in accordance with Corporate Risk Management overall strategy.
This role will provide leadership in daily activities and coaching to employees to deliver projects timely with high quality. Lead several model vetting projects at a time.
Communicate and discuss the findings from the model vetting and related recommendations with the senior stakeholders
Manage, mentor and train staff both within and outside of the department on advanced modeling and model risk measurement methodologies
Assist the VP with vetting plans and vetting strategies for large scale vetting projects. As a result of the extensive number of models that are submitted to the MV group, extensive planning is required to ensure that projects are prioritized and completion timelines are developed that meet business requirements
Communicate on a regular basis with senior leaders across SLF on model vetting findings and recommendations. Work with senior leaders to prioritize model vetting work and prepare annual project plans accordingly. Provide guidance and advice on identification and thus prioritization of high impact models
Oversee the group who will develop advanced analytics to support other EC groups doing production work
Maintain the model vetting corporate policy. Develop and maintain model vetting corporate standard and operating guidelines
Provide thought leadership on related topics. Stay current and ahead of developments in best practices, industry and regulatory developments such as Solvency II, IFRS II etc
Competencies and Specialized Knowledge
Ability to align technical solutions to business realities
Advanced knowledge and experience in stochastic modeling, statistical analysis and data mining
Hand on experience in interest rate and credit risk modeling, capital markets and option pricing
Working knowledge of Economic Capital methodologies for different risk types
Familiarity with Basel II and Solvency II a definite plus
Ability to explain complex financial mathematics in a simple and concise way
Outstanding analytical skills
Demonstrated knowledge of multiple valuation methodologies; implementation and calibration of stochastic models
Demonstrated ability to conceptualize solutions to complex technical issues
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to build strong working relationships
Strong organizational and team building skills
Experience interacting with and reporting to executive management
Strong project management skills with the ability to deliver under pressure and with multiple priorities
Hands-on self-starter who can analyze a problem and develop a solution to implementation
Ability to prototype models and methodologies on a computer system platform
Excellent knowledge of an advanced computer programming language (e.g., VB/VBA, C/C++, Matlab)
Exceptional critical thinking skills (Work entails variable situations requiring analytical, interpretative, evaluative and or constructive thinking)
Understanding of the business context and implications of model usage and evaluate model risk within this greater context
PhD in a quantitative discipline
10 + years of experience within financial services industry, and at least five years in model vetting
Five years minimum management experience is required
