LOCATION: BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CfE), St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, BC

JOB: Working with the Director of the BC-CfE Laboratory Program, the Laboratory Associate is expected to perform duties related to clinical HIV drug resistance testing by following the Lab’s standard operating procedures for receiving samples, RNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis and sequencing using Sanger and next generation platforms.

ORGANIZATION: The BC-CfE currently employs a team of statisticians, programmers, data managers, research nurses and data entry clerks who work collaboratively on cohort-based epidemiological and clinical studies. The BC-CfE is a world renown HIV/AIDS research centre including Research Laboratory, Clinical Trials, Drug Treatment Program, Epidemiology and Professional Education Programs. The BCCfE Laboratory is an accredited clinical laboratory offering testing for more than 20 approved anti-HIV drugs used across Canada, and continues to develop tests as new drugs come on the scene. It performs approximately two-thirds of Canada’s clinical HIV drug resistance testing, HLA-B*57:01 screening for abacavir hypersensitivity, and genotypic testing for HIV CCR5 tropism – these tests are important in determining whether certain drugs are appropriate for use.


  • Identifies and reports equipment, reagent, computer or procedure nonconformities and to prevent the results of nonconforming services from reaching the client
  • Follows safety guidelines and reports potential safety hazards and safety related incidents
  • Performs complex clinical laboratory procedures in a laboratory containing chemical and biological hazards
  • Strictly adheres to the practices of Universal Precautions and all laboratory safety policies and practices
  • Analyzes data
  • Evaluates new procedures, equipment and products
  • Prepares technical reports and summaries as applicable
  • Trains new staff and students
  • Ensures quality assurance and quality control are maintained by keeping appropriate records, running controls, collecting control data and documenting problems or potential problems with procedures and equipment
  • Troubleshoots problems with equipment, methods and reagents
  • Performs and records preventive maintenance on equipment
  • Assists maintaining supplies
  • Assists in preparing and updating laboratory manuals for approval by management staff
  • Performs other duties as required


  • Bachelor’s Degree in biology, biochemistry, virology, molecular biology, immunology or a related field
  • Knowledge of laboratory principles, techniques and procedures, safety practices
  • Knowledge of general and molecular laboratory disciplines in order to perform various clinical procedures
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and familiarity with computerized laboratory information systems used in data collection and analysis
  • Knowledge of the importance of patient confidentiality
  • Excellent analytical skills to evaluate laboratory data, new laboratory procedures and equipment
  • Excellent writing skills and reasoning skills
  • Excellent oral and interpersonal skills to effectively train new staff and students, and work cooperatively in a group
  • Ability to work independently but cooperatively in a group setting
  • Ability to prioritize and schedule weekly tasks to meet the goals for patient result turn-around-times
  • Manual dexterity using equipment, especially pipettes, delicate instruments and a computer keyboard workstation
