AltaLink is currently recruiting for two Manager, Environment Projects. One incumbent will manage the environmental and historical resources program for AltaLink’s Major Projects and Regional Project portfolios. The second incumbent will manage the environmental and historical resources program for AltaLink’s Customer, System Upgrades, and Expansion Project portfolios.
Reporting to the Director, Environment, the Manager, Environment Projects incumbents will be an integral part of a Safety, Health and Environment leadership team with the direct supervision of approximately 5 to 10 personnel to a common goal of servicing our internal clients and external stakeholders. These two positions will be key members of the leadership team of the Project Management organization.
The incumbents will lead a group of Environmental Advisors to apply environmental stewardship across a project life cycle from project concept, facilities application, permitting, and through to construction. The Manager, Environment Projects will work with their counterpart (Manager, Environment - Corporate and Operations) in the implementation of corporate standards, processes and tools to facilitate effective environmental management.
The Manager role is accountable to ensure consistent environmental approach and messaging is being put forward in facilities applications and other external agency submissions and consultation.
This position is ideal for a strong leader who is deliverable driven, has the ability to work with and motivate technical individuals and has a very good understanding of project development and execution processes. The successful candidates must be comfortable in a fast paced Project environment.
Manage a staff of Environmental Professionals and ensure that projects are adequately resourced from pre-planning through to construction and reclamation.
The direct hiring, performance reviews, and performance management of personnel.
Develop coaching relationships with project leadership focused on assisting them define and achieve excellence in environment performance.
Work collaboratively with Engineer, Procure and Construct (EPC) firms to support large scale transmission line construction Projects and also provide support for continuous improvement of environmental performance.
Oversee the implementation of AltaLink's Environmental Protection Plan to ensure regulatory compliance for all new build transmission projects.
Drive a consistent approach to project management related to environment activities across all Projects.
Ensure third party environmental consulting services are properly scoped and monitored to meet the needs and deliverables of the Projects group.
Ensure that all Facilities Applications and Alberta Utilities Commission Information Requests are accurate, robust, and have consistent environmental and historic resources messaging across Projects.
Provide Senior review of all environmental and historical resources regulatory submissions and internal/external technical reports.
Establish clear performance metrics / deliverables for the Project Environment Team and Project execution phases.
Work collaboratively with the Project organization and Corporate organization to define, develop and implement Standards. Ensure Environment Standards are fit for purpose related to Project deliverables.
In concert with the Manager, Environment – Corporate and Operations, establish and maintain relationships with Regulatory Agencies and non-government organizations.
Actively participate in the investigation of significant and high potential near miss environment events.
University degree in an environmental focused program such as Environmental Sciences, Biology, Forestry, Archaeology, or Agriculture;
Minimum of 10 years of environment related work experience;
Experience in managing and mentoring a work team. Previous management or Team Lead experience in the transmission, or oil and gas industry/consulting setting is desired.
Demonstrated project management experience by effectively utilizing systems and processes to manage schedules and deliverables in a cost efficient manner;
Previous experience managing EIA or similar environmental assessment work;
Extensive experience in developing regulatory applications (CEAA, AUC process, Water Act, Public Lands Act, DFO, Alberta Culture etc);
Strong writing and editing skills;
Ability to apply critical thinking and apply environmental stewardship across a project life cycle from facilities application through to construction;
Ability to cooperate and to deal tactfully with others;
Possess a strong work ethic, effective problem solving, conflict resolution and facilitation skills;
Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others;
Previous experience in regulatory hearings is an asset.
