About Drumheller, AB
Drumheller (Population as of 2008: 7,932) is a town on the Red Deer River in the Badlands of east-central Albert, located 139 km north-east of Calgary and home to the world-famous Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology, one of the largest paleontological museums in the world.
Named after an early settler, Samuel Drumheller, the town was incorporated as a village in 1913 and became a city in 1930. Significant growth of the downtown occurred during the two decades following the First World War with the development of the local coal industry. It became known as the "Wonder Town of the West - the Fastest Growing Town in Canada".
Drumheller offers visitors and potential residents a quality of life that has many larger city amenities but with the pace and charm of a small town. Residential, commercial and industrial lots are all reasonably priced. The economic base of Drumheller consists of natural resources (oil, gas, and coal), agriculture, tourism, service industry, hospital and the federal penitentiary. The town also has a very significant manufacturing base producing plastic goods. It has a trading area population of approximately 40,000 and a population of over 1,000,000 within a 100 mile radius.
Drumheller is a favorite destination for over 500,000 visitors each year and has over 50 attractions located within a 100 square kilometer area. The rich, rolling farmlands suddenly break away to reveal an astonishing, twisting, turning canyon, walled with multi-colored layers of sandstone, mudstone and coal alternating with shale sequences.
