Skill Requirements
Education/Qualification: University Degree in Cartography
Experience: minimum of 2 years in a mapping role: using Freehand, Illustrator, MAPublisher
(highly desired: education in computer cartography, cartographic publishing, drawing techniques, desktop mapping, graphic map elements, conception of cartographic products)
Languages: English and German
Area of Specialization: Cartography, Map Design, Concepts of Cartographic Products:
City Maps, Travel Maps, Wall Maps, Atlases, Globes
Specialized Equipment and Systems: Digitizing systems, Computer graphic systems on PC and Mac
Operating Systems and Software: Desktop publishing, Macromedia Freehand, Adobe Illustrator, MAPublisher, Adobe Acrobat Professional/Distiller, Adobe Photoshop, MS Office, Databases
Responsibilities include:
- developing concepts of cartographic products
- planning map content, design and prepare layouts, compiling required data, ability to calculate scales and create map grids
- Computer assisted design and drafting using Macromedia Freehand and Adobe Illustrator
- Ability to convert map files from Freehand to Illustrator to maintain usability of map files
- Georeferencing
- updating and maintaining databases
- Editing digital images and text data
- Monitor for quality, inspect, check and verify final compositions
- Inspecting final map files to ensure they are accurate, creating print-ready files, which requires ability to fix issues once complaints arrouse
- communicate with printers
- occasionally dealing with customer requests via email and phone
- working independently under minimal supervision
- managing and supervising mapping projects
- ability to process map files with german layer structure is highly desired
- correspondence with customers and publishing businesses in English and German
Additional Skills: knowledge of laminating and using large format printers
