2012 (Step Student)

By addressing multiple needs, Bissell Centre provides a holistic approach to helping families and individuals.

Currently, Bissell Centre is looking for the right individual to fill an available STEP Student position of Essential Services Worker. The Essential Services Worker works with adults, families and youth who access the Robert Tegler Friendship Room. The position is responsible to provide a safe and supportive environment for participants to access essential supports and services, to have an opportunity to socialize, and to participate in a variety of meaningful activities.

Specific responsibilities of the position include:

• Monitor activities in the Robert Tegler Friendship Room (RTFR)
• Supervise participants entering and exiting the RTFR
• Provide individual support, crisis intervention support, and advocacy to participants as required
• Engage participants in purposeful conversation
• Assist participants to access Bissell Centre services available in the RTFR, e.g. coffee, laundry, showers, local phone calls, lunches and haircuts
• Assist and direct participants to access outside services available in the RTFR or Bissell East, e.g. AISH, SFI, AADAC, Alberta Health–STI

The ideal candidate must possess the following qualifications:

• Currently attending a post-secondary institution and continuing with your education in the fall of 2012.
• Familiarity with issues of poverty, homelessness and Edmonton’s urban core

Hours and Salary:
Hours are Tuesday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 12:00 (noon) – 5:00 p.m. at $17.12/hr.
