An opportunity currently exists for a Co-op student to work in the Operational Engineering Department of Asset Management in the Calgary office. This position will be part of a multi disciplined engineering team, including substation equipment and facilities, transmission lines, protection and control and SCADA equipment, responsible for direction, analysis, equipment used, records and resolution of operational issues on AltaLink’s transmission facilities in Alberta. The successful candidate will be focused on 69kV through 500kV facility ratings, analysis, records, equipment options and asset databases.
Provide input and recommendations for transmission facility standards and associated specifications of materials and equipment used on transmission facilities, assisting with associated purchasing databases to ensure accuracy.
Provide on-going operational support to field staff and contractors on equipment suitability and approved substitutions.
Provide analysis of existing transmission facilities for system performance enhancements and recommended standards changes and upgrade.
Verifying that data returned on new or modified transmission facilities is code adherent, sufficient and correct for entry into asset databases.
Investigating problems on operating equipment and facilities, analyzing test data, condition monitoring reports and site information to determine proposed solutions and providing support to implement and monitor the results.
Provide input to new designs and verify that designs adhere to applicable codes and standards for construction, safety, operation and maintenance.
Maintaining good relationships with field staff, purchasing, projects and vendors.
Provide assistance to the development of performance and design criteria standards.
An Electrical Engineering student (ideally specializing in power systems) who is enrolled in a Co-op/Internship program at a recognized University.
Knowledge of electrical utility/transmission facilities (substations, lines, protection and control, SCADA).
Familiarity with codes and materials used for transmission facility construction, construction techniques and facility maintenance for voltages 69kV and up.
Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills.
Experience with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Familiarization with ESRI and ArcGIS would be an asset.
Dedicated team player with strong interpersonal and communications skills.
Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage a wide variety of issues simultaneously and meet strict deadlines.
