Role:
- CN is seeking a Transportation Engineer to work within Network Operations in the Safety and Regulatory team.
- This position is responsible for providing transportation engineering support to Network Operations, including train marshalling / handling, train operations, management of in-train forces, train brakes, safety, and fuel conservation.
- General responsibilities: implementation of initiatives, new technology, and operational changes that enhance safety and efficiency. Includes improvement of locomotive and train operations, resolution of operational issues, including testing, evaluating, development of conceptual plans and operating rationale, recommending, economically justifying and implementing.
- This position could be based in either Edmonton or Montreal. Final decision on location will be based on chosen candidate's area.
Critical Performance areas include the following:
- Analyze and make recommendations relative to train marshalling and handling to reduce risk while supporting operational efficiency
- Work closely with stakeholders to develop processes / technology to monitor and enhance train handling practices in the field
- Analyze locomotive event recorder data for post incident investigation, train handling and resolution of equipment issues
- Research and respond to field opportunities / issues regarding train and locomotive operation
- Involved in capital budgeting related to locomotive modifications and improvements
- Field trips, train riding and making train marshalling / handling presentations to operating personnel.
- Analyze and verify locomotive operating characteristics to establish locomotive tonnage ratings and other parameters required for effective locomotive distribution
- Interface with a large number of internal and external stakeholders, including regulator and suppliers.
- Provide quality and timely technical support to / for:
o Operating practices, Engine service officers, Regions, functions, etc.
o Train handling, locomotive operation, train marshalling, DP, Trip optimize / LEADER, LER, LCS, TIBS, simulators, Wi-Tronix, TPC, etc.
o Operating Bulletins, General Notices, System Special Instructions, Regional Special Instructions
- Support CN Safety Management System through Risk Assessment, safety analysis etc.
- Provide leadership and support in assuring industry standards are considered, and risk assessments are performed, prior to the implementation of changes to rules, operating instructions, and procedures
- Contribute to CN's technological push by driving strategic progress on several key fronts including: modernization, efficiency, productivity, asset utilization
- Leverage technology such as: AC locomotives, Distributed Power, train energy management systems: Trip Optimizer, LEADER, Wi-Tronix, etc.

Working Conditions:
- Office conditions and field work conditions with some business travel when projects / assignments require same (75% office)
- Must be able to complete work within tight timeframes, and show schedule flexibility
- Ability to work with minimal direction and as a proactive team member focused on bottom line results
Employment Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, or Operational Research, as well as strong analytical ability, computer skills and operations background are essential
- Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills. Must be a team player.
- Field operations and a thorough understanding of CN's operations, rules & regulations
- Good organization skills to effectively prioritize assignments
- Must be pragmatic, value driven and results oriented.
Applicant should have or be willing to be mentored and acquire:
- Thorough knowledge of train and locomotive operations, including train handling, train brakes, marshalling / in-train forces
- Experience with railway simulation models, tools, stat and economic analyses
- Become qualified as a conductor
Preferred:
- Technical writing and presentation skills
- Business case / analysis training
- Bilingualism is an asset
