AltaLink’s Environment Team has an opening for an Environmental Advisor to conduct environmental reviews and technical support to electrical transmission projects. The position is based in the Calgary office which is the primary work location though some travel within Alberta will be required.
AltaLink has an ongoing large number of new transmission line projects of varying sizes and locations throughout the Province of Alberta. Reporting to the Manager, Environment; the Environmental Advisor will conduct preliminary project environmental reviews to determine potential environmental risk, regulatory compliance and to define appropriate mitigations. As required, the Environmental Advisor will co-ordinate the work of third party environmental consultants to conduct environmental field studies. This role is responsible to write the environmental section of AUC facilities applications and complete environmental protection plans for transmission line projects. The Environmental Advisor is expected to conduct field inspections and site assessments for planned and active transmission line construction projects. As required, this position will also support the development of environment related standards and work processes.
Engage and collaborate with project teams (Siting, Project Manager, Land, Engineering, Stakeholder Engagement, Regulatory) supporting new transmission and substation construction projects.
Complete project preliminary environmental reviews to identify and address potential environmental constraints to transmission line projects.
Co-ordinate environmental consultants to complete required field work (wildlife, rare plant surveys, wetland impact assessments, EFRs etc.).
Technical writing of environmental sections for Facilities Applications.
Prepare project specific environmental protection plans
Conduct field inspections to monitor environmental procedures are being followed.
Contribute to the development of policies and procedures.
University degree in an environmental focused program such as Environmental Sciences, Biology, Forestry or Agriculture.
Minimum of 5 years environment related work experience.
Project management and organizational skills.
Experience conducting biophysical surveys or pre-disturbance assessments.
Environmental monitoring experience for large scale construction projects (oil and gas, hydro, mining, transmission lines) is an asset.
Experience in AUC facilities application regulatory process is an asset.
Good working knowledge of the Water Act, Wildlife Act, SARA, Public Lands Act is an asset.
Previous experience in land reclamation and contamination management is an asset.
Experience with GIS programs is an asset.
Strong writing and editing skills.
Proven track record of good attendance and job performance.
