The Communications & Public Affairs Division (C&PA) is responsible for advancing York University's brand and reputation by providing strategic advice and counsel to York senior management; disseminating news; developing and implementing internal and external communications, strategic marketing, special events; and developing strong relationships with key constituency groups, including alumni, donors, community groups and all levels of government. C&PA includes the following units: Media Relations, Marketing & Creative Services, Strategic Communications and Strategic Initiatives & Administration.
Reporting to the Director, Strategic Communications, the New Media Strategist leads the university�s social media / new media strategy internally (intranet) and externally. H/she will ensure York effectively leverages social media to enhance the University�s reputation, build long term engagement and bring the university closer to current and prospective students, staff and faculty.
Education:
University degree in journalism, new media, communications, English, marketing or related field.
Experience:
A minimum of seven (7) years' experience in advertising, communications, marketing, or public relations with a range of social media, online communications, or interactive engagement experience, including proven expertise in developing and executing strategy plans and building active and sustainable online communities of interest.
Demonstrated experience and a passion for the social technology universe (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Foursquare, Flickr, blogs, wikis, RSS, social bookmarking, discussion forums and community software)
Experience with online monitoring and measurement platforms including but not limited to Omniture, Facebook Insights, YouTube Insights, Google Analytics, HootSuite, TweetDeck, and Social Mention.
Experience in the measurement and analysis of web traffic; experience using social media tools including social networking sites, video sharing sites, blogs and wikis; experience in advertising, public relations and online marketing a must; proficient with social listening trends such as TwitDeck and Google Alerts.
Experience in integrating content into multiple social distribution channels; proven track record of listening and engaging with the online community and acting on their behalf; experience with social media in higher education recruitment, retention and development, and working with design tools including Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash a plus.
Skills:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Knowledge of graphic design best practices and principles for both print and web projects.
Strong technical background with advanced computer skills and experience in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Lotus Notes. Strong understanding of HTML and CSS and familiarity with SEM, and affiliated programming; have good facility with Web content, including writing for the web, video and audio editing and digital imagery; competence with working directly with HTML.
Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
Aptitude to develop and maintain strong working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
Strong leadership capabilities and strong interpersonal skills.
Experience with creating and identifying quality social media content related to academic or non-profit organizations is preferred.
Ability to work effectively under deadlines and juggle several assignments simultaneously.
Data, analytics, and metrics oriented.
A strong awareness of social media tactics and strategies, knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and their respective participants (Facebook, Quora, Youtube, Twitter, Flickr, blogging platforms such as Tumblr, etc.).
Ability to manage multiple priorities and demanding timeframes; knowledge and understanding of technology, search, new trends and the latest in social media innovation; must excel at online research, ability to integrate social media into broader communications and marketing campaigns, and identify trends and opportunities within the user generated content space and make quick decisions.
Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to work accurately and effectively with computerized data systems; ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and promote a positive working environment, spirit of cooperation and positive reactions to change and conflict resolution; ability to communicate effectively and relate well to students, parents, faculty, staff, and others while maintaining appropriate confidentiality; motivational and problem solving capabilities with a high degree of integrity, ethics, and dedication to the mission of the University; ability to develop a business vision for social media, including goals & results.
Skilled at articulating to executives and internal teams the importance of social applications and is able to make calm recommendations during crises; able to exercise good judgment with quick response time; able to present needs and plans and communicate internally; ability to manage negative situations toward positive outcomes.
